95% of the time, almost all of the time, when you are jumping and your horse refuses, it is not the horse refusing. That is you refusing. Riding is completely and totally a mind game. You may have the best eq, but if you're a scared baby approaching a jump, your horse will most likely not go over that jump. How is he to trust you and willingly leave the ground to fly over an object that you yourself, the one asking him to do such actions, is afraid of? How can he be brave when you are not? The answer is simple. He can not. If you approach a jump double guessing every intentions you have, your horse will do the same. You want to go over the jump? You look up and past it. You keep both legs and both reins on him so he has no where to run out. You keep a steady pace. You dive your heels down, and you make a decision that you are getting over that jump. There is no doubt in your mind that, as a team, your horse and you are going over safely. And you will get over the jump. Simple.
