There was the constant clinking of silverware on plates and the chatter of people floating around the small café. We were adding to the noise, laughing and telling stories.

“I remember, this was about four years ago when Amelia was fifteen, we had a sleepover and we stayed up till three in the morning. And then in the morning when mum, Livy and Brittany came to pick me up, we were knackered and could barely move! Amelia was worse, though. She just laid down on the parkway outside of her house and practically fell asleep!”

I groaned as Meredith told them. I had wished for this to stay between the two of us, but I should have been glad it stayed secret for as long as it did. Meredith had a whole closet full of stories about me. I dreaded the day that they all came out.

“So I’ve got this picture, right, where she’s lying on the pavement and she looks like a starfish with her arms above her head! I had it as her contact picture for the longest time!”

Everyone was cracking up as we snacked on our sandwiches, and I couldn’t help but smile. The story was funny, just slightly embarrassing. But it wasn’t as bad as the stories I’ve stored from when Meredith got smashed on her eighteenth birthday. So at least I had some leverage against her. I, on the other hand, had vowed never to drink alcohol- mainly so that the girls didn’t have any stories about what I’d done.

I was about to ask them to change the subject or at least turn the attention to someone else, but I felt a buzzing feeling in my pocket and I pulled it out quickly. Could it be him? Possibly asking to see me again?

Quickly unlocking my mobile, my heart stopped and I started smiling widely.

From: Niall

what are you up to, beautiful?

I held in a squeal and took a deep breath before typing a reply.

To: Niall

Just out eating lunch :) u?

From: Niall

chillin with the boys… they actually want to meet you

I looked up at the girls, who I noticed had turned silent. They were staring at me, their eyebrows arched.

“Who are you talking to?” Ariel asked before taking another bite from her sandwich and the others leaned in slightly, waiting for my answer.

“Niall,” I said hesitantly. They began smiling like crazy and going off into their separate conversations about the boys they fancied. I grinned and looked down at my mobile again. Was this really happening? Was I about to accept an invitation to meet One Direction?

But then I reminded myself that I had already met them all… and then I ran out of the room crying. It seemed like such a petty thing to do now, but back then it was my whole world collapsing around me. I felt like meeting them was going to be the high point in my life, and that I had ruined it. But now, a few days later, I knew that life was only going to get better after meeting Niall.

To: Niall

I’d love to meet them- properly I mean. Last time was a bit embarrassing

From: Niall

theyre going to love you Amelia :) x

I smiled and closed my eyes, savoring this perfect moment. I took a deep breath and looked up to see Meredith frowning at me.

I didn’t say anything; just sent her a quizzical look as if to ask ‘what’s wrong?’. She stared at me blankly for a few more seconds before blinking, snapping out of her trance-like state. Meredith shook her head and mustered a smile before sitting up straighter and turning to talk to the others.
