Meredith ran out of the bedroom, followed closely by a wet Ariel.
“WHAT THE FUDGE- I’M GOING TO KILL YOU MEREDITH!” Ariel chased after Meredith, but kept slipping around on the wooden floors as the water dripped off of her.
Meredith leaped over the couch, where Janessa was waiting, and grabbed her by the shoulders. Janessa shrieked, trying to run away, but Meredith had a tight hold on her shield. Ariel was crouched, deciding which direction to go around the couch. I watched from the hallway, amused at the scene unfolding in front of me.
“I do not want to be a part of this!” Janessa begged.
Then, I heard Mattie move around in her room, and it sounded like she was coming out.
“Guys!” I whispered loudly, waving my hands and pointing towards Mattie’s room. “Mattie’s coming!”
They all froze, staring at Mattie’s door as it creaked open.
“You ready to party?!” Mattie cheered, completely oblivious of the situation. Ariel and Meredith had jumped on the couch, pretending that nothing happened, and we now talking casually. I walked over at Janessa, who continued to stand in the middle of the room, unsure of where to go.
Meredith turned to Mattie, who was venturing into the kitchen now. “So, where are we going?”
“Well, I’ve been to London a couple of times and I know of this really nice shopping outlet a few blocks away. And then for lunch- Ariel, why are you soaked?”
Meredith burst out laughing, and Ariel smiled. “I decided to take a shower.”
“Fully clothed?!” Mattie questioned, not completely believing the lie. She stared at them for a couple more seconds and sighed. “Meredith was assigned to wake you up, wasn’t she?”
Meredith, unable to talk, nodded her head vigorously while she laughed loudly. Mattie shook her head and grabbed a juice box from the fridge; I sat down beside her at the breakfast bar.
“Shopping, huh?” I asked her, slightly unsure.
She turned to me and raised her eyebrows, sucking noisily on the straw until the carton was empty. “Yup. Excited?”
“Yes.” I told her honestly. “I may be poor, but I’m a girl- and girls love shopping.”
Mattie smirked at me. “Amelia, you’re not so poor anymore. Remember mommy’s parting gift?”
I shoved my hand in the pocket of my dress, pulling out the small, rectangular piece of plastic. “How much do you think is on here?”
Mattie stood up and straightened up her clothes. “There’s only one way to find out- I saw an ATM just outside of the hotel.”
I got up with her and we walked out of the flat, telling the girls that we would be back in a few minutes. We got out of the lobby and Mattie pointed me to the right. I spotted the ATM and sucked in a deep breath; I wasn’t nervous that I didn’t have enough money- I was nervous that mom gave me too much.
I stood in front of the machine, looking from the card to the slot. I turned to Mattie.
“I don’t know the pin number.”
She looked at the ground, thinking, and then she grabbed the card from me. I moved to the side for her and she stood in front of the ATM, blocking my view. I heard her stick in the card and type in some numbers. She stepped to the side, gesturing for me to look at the screen with a huge grin on her face.
I looked at the screen, amazed to see that she had guessed the pin number correctly. And then I saw the amount attached to the card.
£96,583.47.
