"Hey, wanna hear a joke?" Lance asked, lightly elbowing Keith behind the stand. They were in the fourth grade Orchestra room, Keith had a viola in hand and Lance was struggling with a cello.

"What?"

"Violas," Lance answered simply, finally getting a proper grip on his instrument.

Keith paused his tuning and looked at Lance. "Fuck you."

Lance exaggerated his facial expression as he whisper-shouted, "that's a bad word Keithy, you shouldn't say shit like that out loud!"

The Korean couldn't help but laugh at Lance's well placed irony, getting mad that he had even laughed in the end.

...

Keith loves music, he couldn't go a day nor do a chore without it. And, for a while, Lance's laughter was music to his ears.

It always reminded the Omega of clear windchimes rustling softly in the wind. Or what he imagined the sound of the sun's rays shining on the sands of a beach to be like. He would even say that Lance's laughter sounded like twinkling stars on a cold, clear night.

Keith never played music in the time that he refused to leave his bed.

...

"Lance! Why did you kick him mijo?" Lance's mother scolded, wagging an accusing finger in her youngest child's face.

Lance just pouted and looked away. Though he was only twelve he had already presented as an Alpha, but it was still fresh. His hormones were were all over the place and he couldn't help it so his mother tried not to reprimand him too much for it.

"Because he was making fun of Hunk! Said that he was too soft to be an Alpha even though presented even before me!"

Lance's mother sighed and leaned over to catch her son's eye.

"That doesn't mean that you can kick him, mijo, he meant it as a joke. Alibight it was a bad one, but talk it out next time. He hasn't presented yet, making him still weaker than you," she explained.

Lance frowned, lowering his eyes and kicking the ground. He tried to hide his face behind his slightly curly hair. It got straighter with growth (unlike him) and the first time Lance noticed that he felt sad for some reason.

His mother smiled at the silliness of her son. Giggling he ruffled his hair, making him whine and look up at her as she stood tall again. "Just don't take it too personally mijo. It was mean, but don't make it meaner."

...

Lance hated himself for it. He hated falling back into the one thing that had brought him into the messiest parts of his life again.

His coaches had called, saying they would need time to re-evaluate his situation. Lance could tell that they were scared of him through the phone.

His friends had reached out, but none of them were ever answered. Lance didn't know how much he cared until they finally stopped calling and texting. None of them made it to his doorstep in the first place so there was no hope of that now.

His family had no clue what was going on, nor were they free enough to notice how dramatically his mood had changed.

His niece and nephew tried to cheer him up but it proved to be ineffective.

He had been in and out of his house, running by stores and backstreets to get the stuff that would take his mind off of things.

Back then it was a morbid curiosity for the feeling of getting high, then it turned into something much worse. Now, there was no difference between the Lance in the video and the Lance kicking the dirt beneath his feet as his head wandered in the cloud of influence he was under.

...

"At least I'm not a weak Omega!" Lance retorted, shoving Keith in the side. The two had been bickering as usual until it turned into something a bit more. They were firing off insults, sure, but these ones hit a little close to home.

"Psh, as if being in your lanky body is any better," Keith poked back, knowing how Lance was self-conscious about it.

"My lanky body is irrelevant!"

"Oh what a great come back!"

"Oh yeah? Then why don't you try to come up with something better?" Lance challenged.

"Fine! You wanna know what your family thinks is irrelevant? You!" Keith shouted, his face practically red from steaming.

"Well at least I have a real family to be irrelevant to!" Lance screamed right back, forgetting about Keith's feelings while being lost in his own emotions of self-doubt and insecurity. But he regretted the words as soon as they left his mouth.

Keith staggered back, as if the words had actually, physically hit him in the gut. His eyes watered and his breathing became labored.

"I-I think I'm gonna go..." Keith said, voice wobbly.

Lance knew he really fucked up when the Omega hadn't even glared back at him, just covered his eyes and ducked out, leaving the Alpha to wallow in his lonely thoughts.

It was the beginning of their falling out.
