Maria POV
*
My plane just landed back in Puerto Rico. Didn't think I'd be back here so soon. But a girl's got to do what a girl's got to do. The only people papi trusted fully was family so I'm sure family are the only ones who can give me some answers. I grabbed my luggage and waited for a cab. I then took the hour long drive to abuela's. Once we made it I paid the fare and headed to the door. I knocked and waited for someone to answer. After thirty seconds Felipe did. "Maria? What are you doing here?"
"Nice to see you too tio," we hugged and he carried my bags in. "Where's abuela and Enrique?"
"Work. I just got off. What brings you by?"
"I need answers Felipe." We sat down in the living room. "On Santi's birthday Sophia was shot-"
"Wait what? How come we never heard this?"
"It's okay Felipe, I promise. She was in a coma all summer. She just woke up and she's fine, recovering really. There were some points where we feared the worst but we kept the faith and she's slowly but surely recovering."
"That's good," he sighed. "So what brings you here?"
"Papi, he was set up wasn't he?" Felipe hesitated so I know I was right. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because you're your father's daughter. The only thing Julio wanted for you was to have a normal life. I wanted you to believe he died in a deal because I knew you would accept that and move on. If you knew he was set up by a friend you would've went on a rampage looking for who did it."
"You're right," I said. "And I plan on doing just that."
"Sobrina-"
"You can't convinced me otherwise tio. Papi was my entire world and his life was extinguished by someone he trusted. That hurts. And they deserve to pay. Chance agrees with me."
"That boy," he sighed. "I can't stop you. As long as you're with Chance I'm sure you'll be fine. That still doesn't explain what you're doing here."
"Chance and I both agree the obvious answer is Darren. The problem is we don't know why or why he wants to kill me. If it's because he's worried about the empire being taken from him he should be after Chance but he wants me, Sophia and Selena dead. Why? Did papi tell you anything?"
"You know him Maria. Julio kept a lot of things to himself in order to protect those he care about. That's why you and your sisters were taught in secret. That's why he rarely let you out and about on your own. If this Darren has a vendetta against your father Julio never led anything on with me."
I sighed. "Well what about Enrique?"
"Enrique doesn't like anybody so I doubt Julio would tell him anything." I huffed. Looks like this trip was a waste of time. "Hold on," he said getting up. He disappeared into the back and back with a box. "Julio was acting a bit paranoid the last time I saw him. He told me to save this for you when the time comes."
"What time?" I asked. He shrugged. "Okay then. Here goes nothing." I opened it and the first thing I see is an envelope with my name on it. I think that's papi's handwriting. I flipped it over and opened it.
Dear Maria,
If you are reading this then my plan has failed. I have failed. I won't be able to keep the promises I made to your mother and always protect you. I am truly sorry. And if you are reading this letter then I'm certain by now you've come to the conclusion that someone in the empire is the cause of my death. My only wish for you is to live a normal life but knowing my beautifully stubborn star you are, you won't rest until you find the person responsible.
