Rule spun around in the office chair at The Register, typing on her laptop when she finally came to a stop. "Are you girls sure you don't want to take a break and join us for dinner? We always love having you Radlee," Betty glances over at her mother and father, the two teens pretending everything was normal. "No, thank you, Alice. I'm not very hungry, besides, Sweet Pea said he's making dinner tonight." Rules cheeks hurt from the forced yet convincing smile on her face, Alice and Hal both buying it. "Same here. Will you get me a tomato bisque for later though?" Hal smiled fondly, clearing his throat and capturing both girls attention. "And maybe two orange freezes?" Betty forced a smile, nodding along with Rule. "Sounds great, dad."
As soon as the two adults were in their car and drove away, Rule nodded at Betty, the blonde wheeling over to Hal's desk and the inky black minx wheeling to the file cabinet behind his desk. Simultaneously, they pulled bobby pins from their hair and picked the locks. Twenty minutes and what felt like a million copies later, Cheryl Blossom arrived at The Register to see what they'd found. "I got into my dad's planner. And I cross-referenced the dates of every black hood attack and they all lined up. Okay, "worked late" the night Midge and Moose were attacked. "Early meeting" the morning Fred was shot. "Business trip" the night Grundy was killed." Rule snorted sarcastically under her breath, making a yeah right face. "Yeah, a business trip in Greendale no doubt." Cheryl nodded in agreeance, scratching the back of her head. "It's not proof, but this is corroboration."
Cheryl and Betty jumped when the phone started to ring, Rule simply rolling her eyes at the action. Betty reached across the desk to answer it, something Rule felt was wrong in her gut. "Mrs. Cooper, this is Dr. Curdle from the coroner's office." All three girls looked at one another in confusion, Rule mouthing what the hell. "Uh, how can I help you?" Rule leaned forward to hear better, Cheryl following suit. "I have a warm corpse for you. Unidentified male, mid-20s. His body turned up off the highway, just outside town, mutilated. Mrs. Cooper, are you there?" Rule and Betty stared at each other, thinking the exact same thing since the blonde had told her about everything. "Yes. Yes, I'll come by to see it. Thank you, Dr. Curdle." Almost out of habit, Rule's hand slid inside of her jacket to touch the knife she carried, the gun in her car. "As always, small bills are preferable."
........................
"So, I take it Sheriff Minetta wouldn't give you the footage back?" Betty commented on Rules bad mood as the three drove to the morgue, squished in Rules truck. "Yeah, there's a fight coming. I can feel it." Cheryl, who was sitting in the middle, squeezed Rules hand as they pulled into the morgue parking lot. "Alright, let's blow this joint. Or, bury this body. Whichever comes first," Betty couldn't help but giggle at Rule, the three walking into the basement where they were supposed to go. Yeah, cause this wasn't creepy at all for them.
"You're not the Mrs. Cooper I was expecting," Rule rolled her eyes at the Morgue dude, snorting sarcastically. "Yeah, well, I'm sure you weren't the child your mother was expecting. But life is full of disappointments." Betty's lips twitched as she tossed the envelope of money towards the, rather pissed, guy. Rule just had that effect. "This poor creature was found in the men's room at the rest stop just outside of Greendale." Betty bit the inside of her cheek as he unzipped the body bag, Cheryl clutching onto Rule for support. Rule, on the other hand, could not be less affected. Nobody except Sweet Pea knew, but Rule wanted to become a surgeon someday. Betty gasped when she realized it wasn't Chic, running out of the room with Cheryl on her heels. Rule smirked sarcastically at the guy, waving goodbye as she walked backward out of the door. "Uh, adios autopsy gremlin." Rule didn't stick around to hear his angered remarks, instead rushing out the door towards Cheryl and Betty. Betty sat on the hood of Rules truck, crying as Cheryl held her. Rule couldn't help but smile at the cousins, watching as their relationship slowly mended. The two girls looked up when Rule clapped her hands together, giving them a rueful smile.
"Alrighty, kids, who's ready to go home?"
..................
"Rule! Did you see it?" Rule snapped her head up from her locker in surprise, turning to look at Toni running towards her. "Did I see what?" Sweet Pea watches as Toni shoves her phone in Rules face, watching the video over her shoulder. "Oh god," Rule looks up at Sweets in horror, the blood drained from their faces. "We need to find Fangs now!"
"Fangs Fogarty, come to the office please."
Those words sent all three flying through the hallways, running straight into Fangs. "The- the video! It got leaked, everyone knows!" Rule placed two hands on the side of his face, trying to calm her. "Fangs, we have to get you out of here okay? The Bulldogs are coming, let's go!" The three teens try to push at Fangs, voices from behind stopping them. "You're dead, Vixen killer!" Rule shoves Fangs harder, trying to get him away from Reggie and the dark circle. Her blood runs cold when she found cops blocking their path on the other side, Fangs trying to make a break for it and getting slammed against the wall. To Rules horror, a knife falls from Fangs pocket, her heart dropping into her stomach. The cops pin Fangs to the ground, Sweet Pea and Rule both lurching forward to help. The only difference between the two being that Sweet Pea was held back and Rule, well, Rule launched herself at Sheriff Minetta.
Not her brightest idea.
(Gif of Rule being her snarky ass self)
A/N - Yall, I just want you to know that there is a chapter title in this book that is going to be VERY ironic in the second book. Hell, I hadn't even planned it that way but its so much better now lmao. Can't tell you which, but yall might hate me for a tiny bit in the second book. But I promise I have a plan. Also, I loved Twilight, but I do hate how Bella acted so helpless sometimes. So, it might seem like Rule is that way in the second book, but I can assure you, she isn't.
