Laughter echoed through Archie Andrew's household, Rule helping Fred cook breakfast for the Serpents. She'd worked at a diner in New York, giving her uber experience in the kitchen. "Good boy, Vegas!" Rule 'dropped' a piece of bacon on the floor, the yellow lab gobbling it up. "Two chicks on a raft here, Jug." Jughead sent an amused smile to his cousin as he took the plate out of her hands, almost dropping it when his father came up behind her. "What's going on here?"
Fred had left the kitchen to eat with almost everyone else, Archie and Jughead standing next to Rule. "Did you do all this?" Rule put down her spatula, drizzling syrup on her pancakes as she answered her uncle. "With an assist from Archie and Cheryl. Toledo's gonna have to wait," Squinting her eyes, Rule shoveled a piece of pancake in her mouth and dared her uncle to defy her. Nobody, not even the devil himself, would argue with the force that was Radlee Vanessa Jones. Fp had made that mistake yesterday when he insinuated that he would be dragging her to Toledo with them, considering the fact he was sorta her guardian. She was technically emancipated, her parents had agreed to it before they died considering it was actually their idea. Now she knew why.
"Maybe so. Bulldogs helping Serpents, Fred Andrews opening his house to a bunch of snakes." Fp clapped Fred on the back, the latter making a comment about everyone being neighbors there. Rule turned to Archie, mock glaring when he took a bite of her pancake. "Thanks, Archie. I know we haven't been on the best of terms lately, but you came through for me, and that means a lot." Archie smiled at Rule, squeezing her arm. "I'm not done yet, how many of these Serpent jackets do you think we can borrow?"
....................
Rule stood in the hallway of Riverdale High surrounded by her peers, Serpent Jackets on every single one of them. Even Josie, who'd taken Sweet Peas and added much fuel to Rule's fire. Sweet Pea smirked when he saw her glance at them, the smirk falling when Reggie tossed an arm around Rule's shoulders and pulled her into his side. Rule smirked up at Reggie, the two had eaten lunch together at Pop's unplanned earlier in the week and even made out a little, but they hadn't discussed what they were to each other. It felt as if Rule's emotional switch had been turned off since the night she found Sweet Pea cheating, now she was just an overwhelming bundle of lust, rage, and unattachment.
And she was fine with that.
"What's the meaning of this?" Principal Weatherbee stood in between two crowds of stand-in serpents. "It's a show of support, Sir." Archie Andrews looked rather hot in his serpent jacket as he spoke up, even Rule raking her eyes over him lazily. "For the Southsiders who are being wrongly transferred out of our school. Everyone's ready to walk out, Principal Weatherbee." Rule tilted her head up, standing a little taller than before. "Any student who walks out better keep walking, because they'll be expelled."
"You're a good man, Principal Weatherbee. You're not the kind of man who discriminates. And if you are, then expel me. Because I don't want to be a part of that." Silence ensued after Archie's speech, Principal Weatherbee taking time to look at everyone. Rule glanced sideways at Jughead, both of them knowing what to do if it all went south. But in the end, Principal Weatherbee drew in a deep breath. "Everyone, get to class."
Waiting until Weatherbee was down the hall, Rule shouted in joy and spun, jumping into Reggie's arms and letting him spin her around. "Yes! Looks like you're gonna have to put up with me for a little while longer, Mantle." Reggie smirked down at Rule, pretending to think for a moment as he sat her down. "Hmm, I think I can roll with that, Vanessa." Reggie had taken to calling Rule by her middle name since calling her Jones reminded them both of Jughead. Veronica snatched Rule's arm, pulling her into an empty room.
"Hey, Rule. I wanted to talk to you about something,"
.....................
Laughter filled the land the Serpents were camped out on, smoke from bonfire's wafting through the air. Rule held a cup of beer in her hand, sipping on it while perched on Reggie's lap. They were now friends with many, many benefits, Rule not wanting any more at the time. Everyone turned their head to the stage when Fp whistled, telling everyone to listen up.
"Some 60 years ago, the very first serpent meeting took place on these same riverbanks. And it makes sense that is where we gather now, where I... where I say my goodbye. Where's my Niece, Rule, and my son, Jughead? Step up here you two," Side by side, Rule and Jughead walked onto the stage, the former confused at the subject the latter had been informed of.
"Forsythe, what're you doing?" Rule hissed the words under her breath, the boys smiling in amusement. "What I should've done a long time ago. I'm retiring from the Serpents. For real this time." Groans were heard around the land, Fp holding a hand up to silence them. "Whoa. But my Niece, she has never stopped fighting for my crew. Hell, she died for it. That's why I'm giving her the mantle, the serpent queen. Jughead will be the Prince, so to speak. But we both agreed she is the true leader,"
Cheers echoed through everyone's lips, Fp grabbing a tiara with green stones from his pocket. Tears pricked the back of Rule's eyes when she recognized the object as the one her mother wore as Serpent Queen. It wasn't something you wore constantly, more like for meetings or special occasions. Gently, Fp placed the object on Rule's head, pulling a red leather jacket from Toni's bag and handing it to her. "As your first order of business as Queen, I think you know just what to do with this." Rule had never felt as happy as she did at that moment, placing a jacket on Cheryl Blossom, who was the first to send out a chant. "All hail the Queen!"
Rule's life was good. And then it all went to hell.
