The market in the light of dawn
was a place
brimming with sweet petrichor.

It didn't stink much,
because they weren't going
to the meat sections today,
so I was relieved.

"If you get lost,
I'm not finding you,"

brother called out
with a tired groan,

shopping bag in one hand,
sifting through veggies
in the other.

I snorted,

"you're younger,
snob," I growled.

"I've done this
more than you've ever,"

he argued back.

With a pout, I turned away,
toward the fruits.

And there I found
a charming little child
with dirty blonde hair--

He was hopping up and down
where the apples were set,
excited before the red fruits.

His grimy hands stretched
as far out as they could,
but it didn't get anywhere
near enough
to his target.

A large, crimson apple.

Going over,
I picked it off the rack
and handed it to the child.

The child squeaked happily,
and took it gratefully with
both of his chubby hands.

Turning toward the shopkeeper,
I guessed I was going to
have to pay for that.

Well, not like I could
demand cash from a kid
in a busy market like this.

"Oh, Noel's kid,
he's probably lost again,"

my brother showed up
beside me.

"UwAHH!? where
the hell did you emerge from?"

Dismissing his sister,
the younger brother sighed,
"Noel, who lives down the street,
single daddy with a parakeet, remember?"

With a hum,
I remembered now.

"Leon, where's your papa?"
brother crouched down
and tenderly asked of the child.

The kid smiled gleefully,
"Papa's sleeping at home!"

"Then, why are you out here
alone, without Papa?"

he asked, a little nervous now.

A kid out in the market this early?

Terrifying. Dangerous.

"Papa hasn't woken up
since yesterday morning,"
Leon seemed pouty about it,

"so Leon got hungry!"

And us two siblings
just froze right then and there.
