"You were home
from noon till now,
right?"
I asked my brother.

And my younger brother raised
a curious eyebrow,

"what about it?"

hesitated.
I didn't know
what my brother would
think about the game,
so I kept it general.

"Have you seen anyone,"
I faltered, "like,
suspicious,
walking around our
house today?"

The younger brother's
fingers slipped
from the chopsticks,
a lump of meat
splashing with a
shattering sizzle
into hot oil.

With a few panicked shrieks and
screams from both siblings
and a pot lid as a shield,

the stove flame was extinguished
to avoid being further distraction.

"What are you on?"
my brother snarled,
angered at the mishap
that was caused by surprise.

"No!" I denied,
tripping over my words,
"I was just,
wondering, that's all."

My brother raised an eyebrow,
not convinced.

"Did you get a stalker?"
he asked, "junior from school?"
a pause.

Then with a softened voice,
concern in his tone,

"or bad guys? Is that it?"

I hesitated,
but only carefully
nodded once.

That was the better
explanation compared
to what I had to offer,
after all.

My brother's expression
flew from annoyance
to sheer rage.

"Alright then,
tomorrow's Saturday!"

he declared,

"if you don't wanna
stay home alone,

you're going with me
when I go to the market."

I freaked out,
"but that's--"

"Four o'clock, yes."

Brother allowed no
further debate,
the stove was flicked
on again, and cooking resumed.

Someone,
as irritating as it was,
I felt elation.
