Patrick was in a fit of giggles due to one of HABIT's wisecracks, his face flushed a light pink colour that reflected just how much he'd been laughing. Tears pricked at his eyes as HABIT observed with confusion,

"Man, it wasn't that funny."

"Yes it was!" Patrick spluttered in response, noticing his best friend's confusion, which sent him down another spiral of giggles. The dark haired other raised an eyebrow in return and chuckled lightly as he shook his head in a fond manner. It was a simple one-liner, HABIT thought that Patrick would have been used to them by now.

Apparently not, as Patrick struggled to breathe due to the laughter that escaped his throat and caused his best friend to feel lighter. It was a pleasant, joyful sound that blessed HABIT's ears. The shorter male felt a small victory at making his friend laugh so much over something so small.

HABIT wished Patrick would laugh more often.

Gently rolling his eyes, the dark haired teenager brought his cup of coffee to his lips and sipped at it as Patrick regained composure. They were currently sitting in the canteen of Fairmount- it was early morning and the sun was beginning to warm the earth and everything it graced. Day by day, the routine was mainly the same more now than ever before; HABIT hadn't been in isolation in a few weeks, he'd been more passive than ever before and the doctors were charting quite an improvement in HABIT's mental state and behaviour. Of course, the darker comments and humour didn't ever leave, neither did the aggressive stance, but he hadn't been physically violent in weeks and the threats were not as explicit. One could say the doctors were shocked and even proud of the dark haired male's progress. After all, they were convinced that HABIT would never be able to re-enter society at one point; then came Patrick when HABIT was falling into a downward spiral and convinced him that there were better things and people to look forward to and talk with- that bad things were not always permanent.

That they weren't always 'bad' and that he wasn't inherently evil.

HABIT would never admit it, but he knew how blessed he was to have found such solace in a single person. Patrick was the reason he was so stable- HABIT was eternally grateful.

He just hoped that Patrick secretly knew that, or felt in some way, the same companionship that he did.

Patrick, now composed, took a deep breath and then sipped at his tea, "Honestly, I am not quite sure why I found that so hilarious."

"Well, that makes two of us. Glad I could make ya laugh." HABIT drawled in response, giving a lazy grin as his friend gave a bright smile in return and shrugged,

"Thank you for doing so! Also, have you seen the new doctor?" He questioned, much to HABIT's interest. A new doctor?

Fresh meat, more like.

"No, there is?" HABIT responded, as Patrick gave a solemn nod and then sighed, "Yes, they are assigning him to me. I am not looking forward to it, but he might be nice! Dr. Morian, apparently."

"Morian, huh? We'll see how long this one lasts."

"Be optimistic for a change of pace, HABIT!"

"Since when were you optimistic?" HABIT questioned, before Patrick faked an innocent smile,

"Oh, perhaps when I realised life was not so terrible after all and you made me laugh?"

"Ew, you cringebucket." HABIT scoffed light-heartedly, taking another sip of his coffee as Patrick laughed, obviously in quite the bubbly mood.

His happiness was infectious.

However, HABIT was concerned with the news of this new doctor. Of course, he had a questionable history with medical staff and the general staff at Fairmount in the past- he had fatally and brutally stabbed a nurse when he was younger, for example. Some of his previous doctors and nurses had made life absolute hell, and the medication they attempted to give him caused him to feel practically nothing, and that horrified him.

He was absolutely terrified they'd do the same to Patrick.

Clenching his jaw momentarily, HABIT gazed at his best friend, his dark eyes meeting Patrick's bright eyes," I don't fuckin' like the sound of a new doctor, to be honest."

Patrick raised an eyebrow in response, confused before he realised why HABIT was so apprehensive. HABIT had confided in him and told him quite a lot about his life at Fairmount before Patrick became so involved, and it was only natural that the shorter teenager was concerned.

Cute.

"Aw, do not worry about me! I am sure Dr. Morian will not be too awful- and if so, I will refuse all sessions!"

HABIT seemed put at ease by Patrick's answer, and gave a curt nod in response as he finished off his coffee, "Okay, if he gives you any trouble-"

"HABIT, be at ease. Nothing is going to happen, or change too drastically." Patrick mused soothingly, as he finished off his cup of tea. The dark haired other visibly relaxed and gave a jaunty smirk,

"Yeah, I guess so. Ah, it's so goddamn early." He stated, stretching out momentarily and giving a light yawn. Patrick, who was an early bird, gave a playful smirk and folded his arms across his chest,

"Aw, are you tired, HABIT?"

"No! I just don't sleep good."

"That is a perfectly structured sentence you just gave me."

"Oh my god, shut up you grad-school instructor." HABIT grumbled, much to Patrick's amusement as the smirk stayed plastered on his lips. Such a devious, teasing smile,

"You simply wish I was your instructor."

"That was kinky as shit."

"Only in your mind." Patrick retorted, as HABIT rolled his eyes in a childish manner and sighed, supressing a light chuckle. It was pleasant just having banter with his best friend, even in the early morning.

Patrick made the days bearable- in fact, enjoyable. He made the days enjoyable and that was more than what HABIT could possibly wish for. Fairmount was not so bad as long as he had coffee and Patrick; as long as the taller teenager could laugh and enjoy hanging out with him- HABIT would be more than happy to spend his days with him.

They were the best of friends, and made a bad situation better, together. One step at a time.
