Belles POV

Being around the Queen was very difficult. One minute she would be calm and collected and another shrieking with tears.

Ruby and I hardly said anything as we followed her down the dark green corridor, in fear of saying something that would set her off. She led us to another room, a room full of mirrors. She stood in the middle of the room and placed her hands on the floor beneath her. As she took her hands off the panel, it slipped open into two revealing a hidden hole. The Queen laughed to herself as she bent down toward it, feeling around for something.

"Why do I keep you two..." She mumbled to herself.

"You caused me so much pain..." She smiled sadly.

Ruby leaned closer to me,

"Who is she talking to?" She said, concerned.

I shook my head, I have no idea. The woman was mad, it could have been anyone.

She pulled out a large brown box and placed it beside her. She opened the lid and revealed the shoes. I gasped at the site of them. We'd done it. We've found the shoes! I couldn't stop myself from smiling as I walked closer.

"Couldn't bare to part with them..." The Queen sighed, stroking the sparkling red jewels.

"They're very beautiful...and so much power," I said in awe.

The Queen snorted.

"Oh yes,the great and powerful Ruby slippers," she said sarcastically, tears forming in her eyes.

"What do you mean?" Ruby asked, an edge to her voice.

"Why do you think I'm still here?" The Queen was staring into space, in her own world.

"What..." I breathed, I knew this was going too well.

"Wait, you said before, you said something happened for people to taunt you...was it to do with them?" Ruby pointed at the shoes.

"Young Dorothy," she laughed, "stood before Glinda the good...in front of the whole of Oz..." She stammered.

Me and Ruby were silent, both thinking the worst.

"And they didn't work..." She whispered, her voice not coming out properly.

We were right.

No. All the air was taken from my lungs. No... Of course they work...

"No, of course they work!" Ruby said, believing in something that wasn't true.

"Do you think I want to be here?! Do you think if I could go home I would?! All I did to get those shoes, everything I went through...I killed someone to get them, and they didn't work," she roared. Her anger wasn't aimed at us, but she couldn't hide her grief.

We've come all this way, and they don't even work. I've lied to Rumple for no reason! If he finds out and I come back empty handed what am I going to say?! If I tell him the truth he will be disappointed I didn't tell him, disappointed I didn't succeed, but what lie could I tell him to make him believe this never happened?

"I put them on my feet, clicked them, said the words, and - nothing!" Dorothy was still rambling.

"But in Belles book it says we need to get something that is in the soles, it doesn't say anything about putting them on..." Ruby clicked.

"Well...we can only try..." I sighed, putting the lid on the box and standing up with it in my hands.

The Queen stood up and straightened herself out.

"Let me get changed and then we'll leave."
