"Conan, look!" Young eight year old Gavin Reed called out to his best friend, ten year old Conan Stern. He was pointing towards the brook where a cluster of rocks were hiding small, slimy frogs. Gavin went over to them as quickly as possible but tried not to scare them off, crouching down next to them when he got there. Conan wandered over, also intrigued by the amphibians.

Gavin picked one up in his hands, a wide grin on his face as he observed it, he then turned to Conan and threw the frog towards him, making the older boy yelp. Gavin laughed loudly at the annoyed look on Conan's face.

"It's not funny, Gavin! You could've hurt the frog!" Conan scolded him, watching as said frog quickly hopped its way back over to the water.

"So what? It's just a frog, it's not like it has feelings," Gavin said with a chuckle. Conan frowned more and smacked Gavin over the back of the head.

"Don't be so cruel," Conan huffed, walking off down the small stream. Gavin rubbed the back of his head and readjusted his backpack, jogging a little to catch up with the taller kid.

The two walked a bit further before reaching a tall willow tree, Gavin immediately ran up to it and grabbed onto one of the vine like branches, swinging on it and making noises to imitate Tarzan. Conan rolled his eyes and smiled as he watched Gavin, walking a bit further towards the trunk of the tree.

"This is good place to stop and eat lunch," Conan said out loud, mostly to himself since he doubted Gavin would be listening. He took his backpack off and placed it down on the grass, sitting down next to it with his legs crossed. He opened the bag and pulled out a lunchbox, packed by his mom. Gavin seemed to listen at the prospect of food. Gavin hopped down off of the branch and walked over to Conan, flinging his bag off of his back and sitting next to him. He opened up his own bag and frowned, rummaging through it for a minute.

"Aww darn, mom forgot to pack my food..." Gavin mumbled, a sad look on his face, closing the bag and throwing it to one side, a heavy sigh leaving his lips.

"She always forgets, always too drunk to remember anything," He mumbled bitterly. Conan looked at him sympathetically and held out half of his sandwich to Gavin.

"You can have some of mine. Mom usually packs me too much anyway," He said softy and smiled at Gavin. Gavin blinked and slowly took the half of the sandwich, smiling at Conan.

"Thanks! You're the best!" Gavin said happily and bit into the sandwich, eating it rather quickly. Conan nodded in response and the two enjoyed the rest of Conan's lunch.

------------

Gavin grinned widely as he saw his best friend waiting for him at the bus stop, waving wildly to the sixteen year old.

"Conan!! Hey!" Gavin greeted him loudly, nothing unusual there. Conan turned when he heard his name called and smiled as Gavin reached him.

"Hello, Gavin. How was school?" He asked the younger boy politely. Gavin huffed in response, his mood shifting a little.

"Shit, as usual. Some asshat pushed me over and called me a faggot, so that wasn't fun, but during PE I kicked the soccer ball into his face so that cheered me up!" He said with a menacing chuckle. Conan rolled his eyes and smiled in amusement.

The bus pulled up to the stop and all the kids climbed on board, including Gavin and Conan. The two usually sat as far at the back as the possibly could, they managed to get the second to last seats this time.

"So what did you do in big ol' high school today?" Gavin asked, having to look up quite a bit to look at Conan's face. Gavin was a bit late with his growth spurts, but he would have them at some point!
