When lunch came, Maria, Carmen, and I headed to our usual table. Unfortunately, it was swarming with seniors, LITERALLY. They probably didn't even have room to fully sit down. Nobody wants to mess with seniors, so we sat down at the next table.
"Hey,"Carmen said to me. I was lost in thought, so I didn't hear her.
"Hey!" Carmen repeated, louder. I jolted out of my thoughts.
"What," I said.
"Prom is coming soon," she said. She looked at me, expecting the big news to flow out of my mouth. I sighed.
"No Carmen," I said, looking down sadly. "I don't have a Prom date."
"Really," Maria said. "No one has asked you?"
"Yeah," I said. "Do you guys even know me? No one is going to ask me! As far as I know, more than half the school either has a date or isn't going!"
"Well," Maria said. "I was hoping that..."
"Someone had asked you." Carmen finished. She looked at me. "You're a great person, and any guy would be lucky to be with you. If no one asks you to Prom, well that's their loss."
"Yeah," Maria said. "And even if no one asks you, you're still going," she looked at me. "Right?"
"Yeah," I said. "Prom is the biggest deal and... who cares if I don't have a date? I can go with you guys, it'll be like a party with my friends." I smiled.
"Of course." Carmen and Maria said simultaneously, smiling.
"So," Carmen said. "You're birthday's next week. You think so one will ask you then?"
"Aww," Maria said. "That would be such a romantic birthday gift!"
"Guys, what did we just talk about? No one is going to ask me to Prom and I'm totally fine with that." Who was I kidding? I was CRUSHED!
"I don't know about that," Carmen said. "Seems to me like the perfect guy is waiting to ask you."
"Who," I asked.
She nodded past my direction. I looked and there was Luke, watching me. I looked back at Carmen and Maria. They were both smiling.
"Luke," I said. "You think Luke is just going to dump Clarissa and ask me? Guys, he's going to Prom with CLARISSA. We're talking about 'that one girl who had 16 requests to Prom and chose the one guy I had a crush on so would be heartbroken!' What are the odds he's going to dump her for me? 1 in a million!"
"You're exaggerating," Maria said.
"It's true and you know it," I said.
On Friday, we began to rehearse the next scene, which was a long one. Scene 6 was the second to last scene, where Loraine attempts to warn America of Michael's plans, but America refuses to believe her.
I took a deep breath as we got on out places. I closed my eyes.
DEEP BREATH, I thought. DON'T CRY, JUST GO WITH THE SCRIPT. I opened my eyes and Carmen was watching me, waiting for me to collect myself before beginning. I nodded.
We began the scene by walking side by side, and our conversation would start with Prom.
"So," Carmen said, reciting her first line. "Michael asked you to Prom?"
I sighed what I thought was dreamily. "Oh yes," I said blankly. "It's a dream come true."
Clarissa looked at me. "More enthusiasm!" She mouthed. I rolled my eyes.
