It was Thursday, and as I woke up, I knew it was the day Carmen, Alyssa, and I had been waiting for: The last day of school. Tomorrow was Prom, and I did my best not to freak or get too excited. I got up, changed, and hurried to get to school.
Seniors were surging through the halls, skipping or walking with joy and excitement for their graduation, which was to take place later in the day. Freshmen were celebrating a good first year and sophomores and juniors both, along with Maria, Carmen, Alyssa and I, celebrated another year survived.
As a curtesy to it being the last day of school, Mrs. Henry decided to make it a minimum day. And so, when the bell rang, Ms. Smith's rein of terror and torture over us finally came to an end, and Carmen, Alyssa, and I ran from her classroom before she could get a chance to snatch us back.
Since we had no more school until next August, Alyssa, Carmen and Maria slept over at my house. Alyssa, Maria, and Carmen brought their dresses to my house so we could get ready and leave from there. We watched a couple of movies and ordered three pizzas, and having eight slices left we saved them for later. Tomorrow, we would spend the day together using time until Prom came. We must've fell asleep at between 12:00 and 1:00 am because when I woke up it was already 8:30.
I woke to the sound of Carmen eating. I opened my eyes and Alyssa and Maria were hovering over me, waiting for me to wake. When I sat up I saw Carmen eating a slice of the leftover pizza on my desk. I must've looked like Mufasa, because Carmen looked at me as if I needed a makeover.
"Finally," she said after finishing her slice. "We've been waiting for you to wake up for ages!" I stood up and looked in the mirror. My bed head was worse than I thought. My hair was tangled and it was standing on all ends. I frowned in disapproval at the sight and grabbed my comb, then began to brush my hair.
"Why didn't you wake me up?" I asked.
"We've been trying," Alyssa said in a tired voice.
"Yeah," Carmen said sarcastically. "The bucket of ice didn't even help." I glared at her, but continued to brush my hair.
"Your mom is so nice," Maria said. "She offered us breakfast."
"Yup," Carmen agreed. "She even offered to heat up four slices of pizza more me. She knows me so well!"
"Anyway," Alyssa said. "What are we going to do? We have..." She checked her phone. "We have eight hours until we have to come and get ready."
"We could do anything." I said. I finished brushing my hair and placed my brush back on my desk. Then, I made my hair into a quick ponytail.
"But first," I continued. "I have to eat."
After I ate, we decided to go to the movies (as if we hadn't watched enough already!) and used some of the money my mom gave me for candy, popcorn, and the tickets. After the movies, it was barely 11:45, and we were still hungry, so we got a quick snack and decided to part our ways until later, where we would meet up at my house to get ready for Prom.
To pass some time, I cleaned my room (not that it was dirty) and tried to figure out how I was going to have my hair for Prom. I could have a bun, but it might look too plain. Finally, I found the perfect hair style, but it was hard to describe. I managed to kill half an hour, so I ran some errands for my mom. Of course, I did other things, but before I knew it, it was 4:30 and Carmen and Alyssa were already at my house. Carmen was just DYING to put on her dress.
"Come on," she whined. "Can't I put it on yet!?"
"Carmen," Alyssa said, a bit irritated. "Either put it on or stop your whining, I can't hear my own thoughts!"
In excitement, she squealed and ran to change into it. I heard a car door close and looked out my window to see who it was. Maria had just been dropped off by her parents and walked to the door. When she came to my room, Carmen was already dressed.
Next to change into their dress was Maria, then Alyssa, and finally me. In the meantime, Carmen had made a braid to the side and Alyssa had her hair in a ponytail to the side. Maria's hair was made in a bun and I realized that the three of them had their butterfly pin on their hair; Carmen's white pin in the hair just above her side braid, Alyssa's black pin on her side ponytail, and Maria's gold pin on her bun. When I changed into my dress, I still hadn't done my hair, and already it was 5:15. Prom started at 5:30, and so we would be late.
I showed Carmen the picture of the hairstyle I wanted and she went to work. Carmen doesn't do hair too badly, in fact she was a fashion stylist, a professional. When I looked in the mirror, Carmen had done a better job then in the picture.
My hair was down and came in waves and my red butterfly pin was placed on my hair to the side. I was speechless.
"Carmen," I said. "You did a good job!"
"Well," she said. "I'm a professional you know!"
After that, we decided to go in Carmen's car to Prom. It would be taking place in a hotel and it was already 5:40. We hurried, made sure everything was just fine, and drove to the hotel.
