'Will you go to Prom with me?' Luke had asked. My cheeks grew hotter. I know he had asked me this before, but I suddenly understood why he asked Clarissa before me. I suddenly understood the conflict between him and his emotions. This time, it wasn't just a question, it was a request.
"Yes," I finally answered, sure that 'yes' was the right answer. "This time, yes, I would love to go to Prom with you Luke." I smiled and he smiled back. All we could hear in the background was music.
"So..." Luke said, listening intently to the music. "Would you care to dance?" I smiled, but shook my head.
"No thanks," I said. "I don't dance."
"Come on," he urged. "Just one dance?" I looked at him but kept my ground. Eventually, we went back inside. My friends, still looking stunned, smiled as I came back in with Luke at my side. I smiled back, and a slow song began to play.
"Why don't you like to dance?" He asked as he took my hand.
"I-" I said. "It's not my 'thing'."
"Oh come on," he said, smiling. "I'm sure you're great at it. What do you say?" He held out his other hand to ask me to dance, and finally I took it. He led me to the floor where other couple were slow dancing together.
I put my arms around his neck as he put his arms around my waist. I tensed when he did and he looked at me and I relaxed. We danced together for a few silent moments.
"Wow," Luke said, looking at me. "You don't dance too bad."
"Uh huh," I said, not believing him. "No, I'm horrible. That's what you mean." He was about to protest when I said, "Oh come on. Just, don't argue with me. But I'm sure you've danced a few times...?"
"Well like you, I don't have much experience," he said, and I laughed.
"You know," I admitted. "I didn't think you had any feelings for me. I didn't even think you noticed me!"
"Of course I noticed you," he said. "You were one of the best in the class! And as for not having feelings for you, how could I not?" I looked into his eyes and he looked into mine, and I knew he wasn't lying.
I bit my lip and grew nervous. What happens next? I asked myself. We hadn't noticed the slow song ended until the silence grew between us. A different song was playing but neither of us broke away and we continued to slow dance at our own pace.
"Miranda," he said after a while. I looked at the ground, nervous of what could come. "You know I am moving, right?"
I nodded. "Maria told me." I looked up at him. "But you're not done with high school, And neither is Maria! I don't want you to go."
"Me neither," he replied. "But I have to ask you, will you go out with me?" I looked away. Did he mean it? He was leaving so soon, could I bare it?
"I know," he continued. "It's happening so soon. That just a few weeks ago I pretended not to see you, but I do like you. I want to spend my last moments here with you. I don't want to forget you." I looked into his eyes and I knew he wasn't lying.
"Yes," I finally replied. And we danced the rest of the night, dancing to a song only we could hear, a song that played in our hearts.
