The next morning I woke to an empty hospital room, last night was my first night crying myself to sleep. As I sat up in my bed a pain shot through my right leg. Damn it I was really hoping I was just having a nightmare. I removed the covers off my body and looked down at my legs. And there it was a useless stump that ended right below my knee cap. Right where I should have had a calf and a foot, there was nothing; nothing but a terrifying memory. I quickly covered my legs with the blankets, trying to rid the memory from my mind.
For some reason that’s when I fully noticed my room. And on my side table there was a bouquet of flowers, containing lilies and red roses. Attached to the vase was a note, it read.
“I love you so much and I’ll always be here for you. Don’t forget that. Love, Luke”
I smiled at the note; it made me feel a lot better, but made me realize, where is everyone? That’s when I noticed the second note next to the vase of flowers, this one read.
“Kat when to get some breakfast, we’ll bring you something. Love, Luke”
I swear this boy is too adorable. I took this time to call my parents, let them know I’m ok. My laptop was on the table that could roll over my bed. I opened it and set it up to face time my parents.
“Katharine! Oh my God, are you ok? How are you? Liz called us and told us everything, we’re trying to get plane tickets to fly out there, but all flights are cancelled because of a blizzard. But don’t worry we’re trying to get out there as fast as we can.” My mom started rambling through the computer.
“Mom calm down I’m ok.” I laughed, even though I wasn’t fully ok, but the flowers from Luke did make me feel better so I was ok with saying it.
“No you’re not! Our baby was attacked by a shark and lost her leg.” she cried.
“Yeah I know mom and you bringing it up and talking about it isn’t helping.” I said now getting annoyed with her not dropping the subject.
“Sorry.” She said.
“How are you feeling?” my dad asked.
“Alright I guess, really soar and every move I make hurts.”
“Well like mom said we’re trying to get out there.” My dad said.
“I know. I keep forgetting that it’s winter back home.”
“Yeah, now what are we going to do about UNSW? Because we all know that they’re going to revoke the scholarship.” My dad began.
“Really Bill?” my mom questioned him. “Our daughter was attacked by a shark! Can we show a little empathy and not worry or talk about softball for once!” she yelled at him.
“What we have to talk about it eventually!” he yelled back.
