I laid in my hospital bed listening to my music. I scrolled through my list of songs switching between Habits by Tove Lo, Shake it Off by Taylor Swift, Want U Back by Cher Lloyd, Really Don’t Care by Demi Lavato and Black Widow by Iggy Azalea because I’m like obsessed with these 5 songs at the moment. I’m busy jamming out to Iggy rapping when the doctor walks in my room carrying a big box and saying something.

“I’m sorry?” I ask as I pull my ear buds out.

“Guess what’s here!” the doctor said again as I sat up and he laid the box down in front of me. It’s been two weeks since the attack now and I have now mastered using the crutches. My prosthetic has finally come in; now it’s time for the real test.

Everyone stood around my bed, but I sat there looking at the box, not wanting to open it. Don’t get me wrong I’m excited it’s finally here, but I’m scared, this is my life now. I have to rely on using it to do the simplest tasks.

Biggest fear right now: not being able to walk.

“Well open it.” Gill said excitedly wanting to see it, but I continued to sit there not moving thinking about my future and having to use it. I’m snapped out of my thoughts when Luke places a hand on my shoulder. I look up at him and he gives me a reassuring, confident smile and I open the box.

I pick up the metal leg, I expected it to be really heavy but it’s so light. It has a black metallic finish on it, there’s a hollow metal shin and foot that I can where with any shoe, cleat, boot or even go shoe less. I even got another leg too but this one has a flesh color finish on it that I can where with heels and for special occasions.

“Well you want to test it out?” the doctor asked me and I nodded. I moved so my leg was hanging off the bed and the doctor took the leg and showed me how to hook the prosthetic to the rest of my leg.

“Ready?” Luke asked me when the doctor was done. I sat there looking at it for a minute, I finally shook my head in agreement and he held a hand out for me to take and helped me up. I started to fall right back down trying to gain my balance that I haven’t used in two weeks. Luke caught me.

“You don’t have to do this if you don’t want too.” He said.

“No I have to do this.” I rejected gaining my balance and holding onto his shoulder.

“Here hold onto Luke’s shoulder with one hand and mine with the other.” Michael suggested. “This way you can hold onto us while you walk, until you get used to it.”

“Ok” I replied grabbing their shoulders.

“Ready?” Luke asked.

“Ready.” I took a deep breath.

They slowly started to walk and so did I. I placed my real foot in front of my fake one and viscera, I was doing it. I was walking. I couldn’t stop smiling and giggling.

“Kat you’re doing it!” Katey shouted with excitement.

“I’m doing it!” I laughed a smile growing on my face as I looked down at my legs, watching me walk, not believing it. I looked up and looked at Luke, who almost had a bigger smile than mine.

“I’m doing it” I laughed again.

“Yeah you are and you’re doing great.” He smiled and Michael smiled too. I looked over to Katey, Gill, Calum, Ashton and Liz. Gill was recording the whole thing on her phone which made me laugh even more.

I was walking and the prosthetic wasn’t hurting my actual leg. Maybe I was going to be ok after all.
