Melody's POV
It's been over two months since we arrived at my Uncle's farm. I know because of the fresh tallies I made on the wall. Old habits die hard.
What I can't count is the scars that now litter my body, and the bruises that join them.
I used to think Hell was a great way to describe my surroundings.
Now it's an understatement.
A few weeks ago I forgot Crutchie's laugh.
Then I forgot the sound of his voice.
Today it was his smile.
It seems as though him, the longing house, my entire time as a newsie is nothing more than a faded memory gone grey, wonderful and full of magic, but distant.
Distant enough that it loses it sheen.
Fear not for my well being, I have a plan.
I sneak out, I steal a horse, I ride the horse to the nearest train station, I hop on a train and I ride until I'm home.
It's a great plan, really.
No it's not.
It's the best I got.
It's not like I can just take a trolley ride back to New York. Nor can I ride a horse. The rails are the fastest way, but their expensive.
Which means I can't buy a ticket.
Which means I'm going illegally.
One of the many flaws in this "great" plan.
But it's gonna work.
It has to.
It has to.
If it doesn't, I'm screwed.
As if I'm not already.
I'll make it work.
I have to.
