Laughter filled the underground. There always had been laughter, for as long as he could remember.
The laughter was always light and calm, happy and free even if they weren't. The world wasn't cold... Nor was he.
Oh, Cross could remember it well!
He loved it, there was always the happy scent of pine and home cooking out in the underground; Undyne was the protector even though she and most of the royal guards didn't need to do much, someone was always causing a party so no one really slept much. It was peaceful.
Then a human came. Lesser and Greater had been the first to die by their hands. Then went half of the little Froggits. He had to stop them.
They fought for days, they fought for so long, until the child no longer had strength... Cross killed them when they went to run...
Their orange soul glowed brightly, it beckoning all the hidden monsters out. The first soul.
Then more came. Second one was light blue, they screamed as they died... It was that scream that haunted his dreams... Third was purple, Fourth was dark blue, and the Fifth was yellow. The nightmare was now a dream, he longed to hear the human's scream and cries... After all they had done to his species...
The Sixth soul didn't fight, they begged for MERCY, pleaded and bargained... But Undyne wasn't going to stop... Nor did she.
Cross watched in horror as a stray spear flew towards him, the world slowing down. The Sixth human child gasped, tears in their eyes as they ran... Their blood spilling on white skeleton as the spear went through their heart, their body shielding the fragile monster from it.
The monster cried and hid from the fish monster... How could she? All the other's fought, but that one? That one healed and helped so many other monsters! They were nothing but kind and gentle! They died protecting him! Him! A murderer! Oh, nightmares of his sins came back again... Only worse.
Then came the Seventh human... The last human that was needed to break the barrier. The one that changed almost everything!
Like the one before them, they were kind and gentle, but they were DETERMINED. They protected themselves and all around them, they weren't going to die in the underground... They were going to save them all...
Cross protected them, fought his brother, the Royal Guard, and even Mettaton... He needed to make sure they lived... He didn't want them to die. He wanted to atone for his painful sins.
But it didn't matter. They died, by his King... The King that had him punished by the people he loved. But they couldn't, so he did it.
Frisk was the child's name, and Frisk's soul shattered before it could've been used to break the barrier, something all that knew them was glad for... Something that went right for a kind human.
Then came Chara... A ruthless, deceiving demon!
They looked so much liked Frisk that so many monsters had a hard time fighting her, so hard a time of killing her!
Cross fought her multiple times, being nearly killed every time. She won in the end, having killed everyone but him and his King... The King he was going to protect with his every last breath!
Yet, he still lost... He was alone with the demon... Their souls pulled together by some force unknown to them... But, they didn't want to be alone...
Not after they had killed their first world together, shed real blood together, had decided to recreate everyone once more! To save Frisk! The one that had brought Chara to her bloodlust and anger, and the one that was their link...
Oh, Cross remembered the laughter and happiness, but how cold he had gotten... His body no longer to be warm after all the deaths he had seen... after all the damage he had to take for one deranged skeleton... after all the blood on his hand... His soul was tainted, tainted to near darkness... But Nightmare can stop it.... Only he can stop it...
If the King wishes it.
