"So how was it?" August asks from beside me, at our usual booth.
"Weird. I met his daughter. Or I guess my half sister? I don't know. But she looks just like August. Like an exact carbon copy."
"Well, she does have the same dad."
"But I look more like my dad."
He shrugs. "Maybe her mom?"
"Maybe," I let out a deep sigh and play with my napkin trash.
"We've been sitting here 15 minutes after Finley left. Should we get out of here?" He asks.
"That sounded suggestive," I raise my eyebrows.
"Only if you want it to be," he shoots me a wink before grabbing his sweatshirt and standing up. He extends a hand to me and I grab it.
"So where should we go?"
"I don't know. You're the one that's been in this town for five years," I joke.
He entwines his fingers with mine, although our height difference makes it awkward.
"Let's just see where this walk takes us," he smiles sweetly at me and I return it.
"Sounds like an adventure."
We exit the diner and make our way down the sidewalk, the midday summer sun caressing our faces.
"You know what Riley?" He slightly turns towards me as we walk at a slow and comfortable pace.
"Hm?" I look at him.
"I've never asked you what your favorite color is."
I laugh. I guess he's right. What kind of couple doesn't know each other's favorite colors?
"Oh my god. How shameful of us. I'm a terrible girlfriend and you're a terrible boyfriend!" I joke. He laughs and looks at me again.
"So you're using the "g" and "b" words now?" He asks.
"Gay and bitch? I've always used them."
He giggles and rolls his eyes at me.
"Yeah yeah. I guess I am," I shrug.
"Okay, girlfriend."
"Alright, okay."
"So what is it?"
"What is what?"
"Your favorite color?"
I think a second.
"Hard to say. I like a lot of colors," I shrug.
"Top three?"
"Huh. Probably blue and greenish-yellow."
"And why is that?" I releases my hand to hop up on a flower box and walk on the sides of it.
"Well, I like blue because it's the color of August's eyes. And greenish-yellow because it's the color of my other August's eyes."
"I'm absolutely flattered," he smiles and hops down from the flower box, standing in front of me and walking backwards now.
"What's your favorite color?" I ask.
"Yellow."
"Like bright yellow?" I raise my eyebrows. "I mean I know it's pretty in right now, but you have to admit, bright yellow is a bit much."
"No not bright yellow. Like a mellow, light, honey yellow."
He reaches for my hands and I grasp his.
"And why's that?"
"Because that's the color of your eyes. Well when the sun hits them. I guess my other color would be deep brown. For when the suns not hitting them."
"Well I guess we're just two fools in love," I smile.
He stops walking and I step on his foot and run into his chest.
"Hey this walking thing only works when your legs are moving," I look up at him. He stares back, brows furrowed. "Something wrong?"
He shakes his head no. "No."
"Then why'd you stop walking?" I step around him and attempt to continue our walk, but he lightly grabs my forearm and turns me around. We stare at each other like this for a few seconds.
"Riley?"
"Yeah?"
"You love me?"
My eyes widen, I can feel my heart beating against my chest and my cheeks warming up in a blush.
"No! I- I mean, I don't know. Well I do know but. . . you know? I do- no! Don't take that seriously, that's just my mouth moving faster than my brain! I don't know what to say right now I'm-"
He takes my face into his hands and stares into my eyes. I nibble on my bottom lip and stare back at his, a little worried.
"Yeah. I love you," I admit softly.
He suddenly kisses me softly. Something about kissing him caused my heart beat way too fast than it should, my toes to curl and my cheeks to burn. Like every time he kissed me was the first.
August pulls back and looks at me one more time.
"Well, Riley, I love you too."
