SONG FOR YOU / DONNY HATHAWAY/
ALBUM: DONNY HATHAWAY / 1971

This song is the song
my father loved the most.
It was unknown why but
the fact that he did not have a
good relationship with my
mother made me figure out
why.

She was barely there as he tried
to survive.

He was trying to stay alive for
my sake. But he couldn't handle it.

I remember his tired figure sauntering
into the room, the first thing he would
do is listen to this song. His rough voice
would belt out this song and he wouldn't
care if he woke someone up.

He dropped his briefcase, untying the
tie that hurt his neck.

He danced and his hands were out
as if he was dancing with somebody,
tears falling down his solemn face.

Mother wasn't there and he knew
and that's what hurt him.

He sang his heart.

He sang for the woman that
wasn't there.

He sang for the impossible.

He went from a famous singer
that held a lot of confidence to
a broken man that barely had
anything.

He let tears fall from his face,
the vein from his neck popping
out as his heart went along the
keys of the piano.

My father was a struggling man
that was trying to help his 5
children.

I was the last one.

The first one from another man
that left.

The second and third from another
man that my father wished to never be.

The fourth from a night untold.

I was the one from a man who's
passion for music was everything.

It was his life.

My father was alone.

But he still sang this song for a woman
that happens to be in a bed with another
man.
