[Sweet Dreams- Emily Browning]

"Mommy?" I ask looking around the dark room. "Mommy?!" I panic as my breathing picks up and my heart rate increases.

"It's okay Sadie, I'm right here." I look behind me to where that voice came from. It's dark in here so it's hard to see but I can make out long, blackish hair and a tall figure laying on a metal table. It has to be her.

"Is that you mommy?"

"Yes Sadie, it's me."

"Where are we?" She's quiet for a moment. When that moment feels like too long I open my mouth to call out for her.

"We're in a gang house. But don't worry, we're going to get you out of here. I'll get you out of here."

"What about you?"

"Don't worry about me. I'm going to get you out of here and you're going to go home to daddy."

"But you'll come too, right?"

Before she can reply I hear footsteps and wicked laughter, making me snap my head around to look at the stairs, watching a man walk down them.

"Aww, that's sweet. You think you can save your daughter." The man smiles grimly.

"Let her go Luther, she has nothing to do with this."

"You gave birth to her didn't you? She has everything to do with this."

"Please Luther, just leave her alone. Don't hurt her?" Mommy pleads with the man.

"You think that's going to work on me Caroline? I'm a gang leader. You're a gang leaders wife."

"Dennis is going to find you, come after you, kill you, and get my daughter and I out of here!" Mommy hisses and again, the man laughs.

"Don't hold your breath."

The man turns his attention to me and takes slow steps towards me.

"Hello." He smirks.

"Who are you?" My voice comes out shaky.

"My name is Luther. Do you want to see a show?" A show? For some reason I don't think he's talking about Wonder Pets. I shake my head. "Too bad." He grabs a big, sharp knife that was hanging above my head and walks back to Mommy.

"Luther please-"

"Shh, I like to work in silence." The scary man presses his finger to his lips.

"At least put Sadie in another room."

"But we wouldn't want her to miss this now would we?" Mommy drops her head, making her black hair cover her pained blue eyes.

He slowly brings the knife up and gently traces the outline of her jaw. I freeze. My legs stop searching for the floor beneath me, just hanging there, and my lips stop quivering as I sink my teeth into them. I don't know what to do, so I just watch.

The knife moves to the center of her chest as he holds it firmly in his hand, pointing it toward her.  My eyes widen as I realize what he's about to do. I'm only five years old, but I can still grasp into what's about to go down right now.

"No-" Before I can even get the full word out the knife jabs into my mother's chest, followed by her short scream and blood squirting everywhere; onto Luther, onto the walls, onto my clothes.

I scream at the top of my lungs as tears stream down my cheeks, I swing my arms back and forth against the wall and bang my head against it loudly, not caring if I bust my head open or not. I want to go home! I want to wake up! Wake up Sadie! Wake up!

Through my tears I see the man watching me and laughing, which I creases my fear and rage.

No matter what I say, no matter what I do, I can't help my mother now. She's gone, because of this man named Luther.

"Hey!" I shout and he stops laughing and looks at me. "I swear to you when I'm older I will find you, torture you, kill you, and laugh as I watch your body burn in a fire I made just for you!" I growl in a deep, unnatural voice. Almost like a demon has possessed me.

I don't know how I'll do it. I don't know when I'll do it. But I will make this man pay.
