"How the hell did you get the yorkie back?" Karen asked Matt and Foggy with a laugh. We were at a bar in town called Josie's. I guess Matt and Foggy helped her out a few times and this became their bar. The place they went after work to blow off steam. The four of us sat around a small table, beers in our hands. "Wasn't it with some peanut butter?" Foggy asked his partner. But Matt shook his head. "No. We tried that but turns out its' owner practically raised it on peppermint schnapps," Matt reminded his friend.
"Isn't that seasonal? Where did you find peppermint schnapps in the middle of September?" I asked the two before taking a sip of my beer. "Oh, right, right! My Punjabi teacher happened to hoard the stuff. Broke into his office and stole a bottle," Foggy said. I scoffed and shook my head. "I don't even want to know how you figured out something that specific," I commented. Matt laughed, his shoulders shaking with the sound. He leaned his head back as well and I caught myself staring at his smile.
"Okay, what about you, Allison? Any crazy stories?" Karen asked me, smirking. "Ooh, yes. Especially if it involves Matt. Those are always good," Foggy agreed with a nod before taking a swig of his beer. "Oh, I could tell you stories about Matt," I said with a devilish smirk. Matt seemed to sense it because he turned his head towards me. "No, you won't," Matt chastised me. I laughed at his caution.
"Oh God. Do you remember when Sister Dora caught us in the..." I trailed off as Matt nodded. "Oh, yes. How could I forget?" he asked. His smile was sweet and fond. I knew he was remembering that moment in a positive light. "I think she was about to beat us both with a cane," I said through my fits of giggles. Foggy was smiling at the two of us. But, Karen... well, her smile faltered.
"Now I have to know," Foggy said, leaning forward, resting his elbows on the table. I glanced over at Matt, staying silent as I waited for permission to tell the story. After a few seconds, he sighed and nodded. "Okay, so we were, what fourteen?" I asked Matt. "Yeah, and you were always getting me into trouble," Matt said as if chastising me. I scoffed. "You can get yourself into trouble without my help," I teased him. He smiled, shaking his head as silent chuckles shook his shoulders.
"So, what happened?" Karen prompted even though she looked nervous for the story. "Well, we were in the confessional booth –" I started when Matt spoke. "The priest's side," he clarified. I nodded. "Right, the priest's side. We were hiding from the nuns," I paused. "They were trying to make me be Joseph in the church's annual Christmas play," Matt added with a laugh. "So, we were just hiding in this tiny little space, whispering little jokes to see who could make the other laugh the loudest. Well, this little old woman came in for confessional," I continued. Matt picked up the story from there.
"So, considering our game, I decided to pretend to be one of the priests. And this woman was being serious, but I just kept making these crude innuendos. Oh, that poor woman," Matt commented to himself, shaking his head. "Needless to say, he won the game. That lady practically ran out of there. I was so busy laughing my ass off that neither of us heard Sister Dora coming. She was so mad, she actually had steam coming out of her ears!" I continued, laughing fondly at the memory. "We practically left skid marks, we ran out of there so fast," Matt added as I continued with my fit of giggles. Karen had a soft smile on her lips now. Foggy was laughing as Matt shook his head, his smile still in place.
"Are all your stories about pissing off nuns?" Karen asked after a moment. I turned my gaze onto Matt, pulling my lips between my teeth. "Only the ones we can tell you," Matt responded, taking a sip of his beer. "Okay, what else? Something maybe not with nuns," Foggy suggested when his laughter subsided. "Or even something not crazy? What was something normal you guys did?" Karen asked. Matt smiled softly, pausing to remember our past.
