I caught up to Foggy as we raced into the main office of the Bulletin. It was silent, and the sight that greeted us was that of bodies lying broken and twisted amongst the desks. In the center of the room was a man in a suit. A familiar suit.
He reached down, pulling something out of flesh, before turning slowly towards us. I was met by the red, glass eyes of the Daredevil helmet. As the man stared at us, lips twitching up into a slight smirk, I shifted myself to be in front of Foggy. I was ready for whatever he was going to throw at me. Except maybe actually throwing a baton at me.
My eyes went wide as it flew at me, but I didn't blink. Not even as a hand snapped out, catching it only a few inches from my face. My gaze snapped to the figure in black standing beside me. He moved slowly, holding the baton in his hand as if testing the feel of it. To me, it looked just like the ones he was extremely familiar with.
He paused, standing in front of me as I heard Foggy rush away. The imposter was too focused on Matt to care that Foggy ran away and could have easily been killed. Instead, he kept his gaze focused on the real threat.
I didn't want to move. I didn't want to run. I wanted to stay and fight. I had a feeling Matt could sense that, because without looking, he reached back and caught my hand in his. I let him, taking comfort in his gentle squeeze of my fingers. Matt didn't stay still though, slowly moving away from me so that the imposter's gaze stayed with him instead of switching to me. When Matt's fingers slipped from my hand, I knew what I had to do.
Running towards the door Foggy had disappeared into, I yanked it open and slipped inside to see Karen Page pointing a big ass gun at me. "Allison?" Sam's voice called in confusion. He was off to the side of Karen, Ellison, and Jasper Evans behind her. Foggy was right beside me at the door, having stopped when he saw the gun.
"Ah, Karen, you, crazy, beautiful, genius, you," I sighed in relief as she lowered her gun, letting me get closer. "What's going on out there?" Sam asked as Karen held up her hands, offering me the gun. I took it, checking it over as the sound of fighting outside the room reached my ears. I had to ignore it, even though everything in me told me I had to go out there and help Matt. But I also had to stay in here and keep my friends safe.
I checked the clip to make sure it was full before replacing it and flicking off the safety. Then I held the gun out to Karen again. "No, you should –" she started to protest when I cut her off, shoving the gun in her hand. "Take it," I insisted. She gulped down some air before nodding.
"Allison, what the hell is going on out there?" Sam asked as I began searching the conference room for anything that could make a useful weapon. "Some guy dressed as Daredevil is killing everyone," Foggy answered for me as I continued to search. "What?" Ellison snapped in question as I grabbed a pair of scissors from a cup. These would have to do.
Taking a deep breath, I used all my strength to break the two blades of the scissors apart, holding them as I would my daggers. "What are you doing?" Sam asked, disbelief mixing with the fear in his voice. Sighing, I finally turned to him. "You're about to see some crazy shit, Sam. And right now, I need you to trust me, okay? Please," I begged him. He hesitated but gave a nod. Nodding in return, I turned and grabbed a desk, flipping it towards the door. Foggy moved out of the way before helping me build a barricade.
Then we stood at the ready. I was in front, two halves of the scissors ready to slice whoever came through. Thankfully, they were good, sharp scissors. Karen was right behind me, gun raised and aimed over my shoulder. Foggy and Sam were right next to her. Taking another deep breath to steady myself, I glanced back at Karen. "If I go down, take him out," I told her, keeping my voice low.
Pounding came from the door, the rattling cutting off any response she could come up with. Then the door started to break. The cheap wood began to splinter, a hole forming from someone's foot before it finally opened. In stepped the imposter. Panic rose in me at the sight of him and not Matt. What happened to Matt?
