Waluigi woke up to a ring at the door. Wario definitely wouldn't answer at this hour, that slob. He reluctantly rolled out of his bed and trudged down the stairs to the front door. When he opened the door, there was a boo standing on the other side. He had a letter in his hand. "What is it?" Waluigi asked.
"There's a tennis match on this afternoon, you were invited," The boo replied.
"Why would they invite me? Is it a big game or something?" There was no mention of a sporting event this week. He was invited to those as most people are, but not just everyday matches with Peach and the Mario Bros.
"Don't feel special, they invited most people as a way to try and get Princess Aria acquainted with the citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom. There's going to be a picnic afterwards to give her a better chance to socialize," the boo said.
"Wow thanks," Waluigi said sarcastically, but then something hit him. "Wait who's Princess Aria?" He asked.
"She's the princess of nymphs, from the Floating Islands. She has long, wild hair, and bright blue eyes. She's also quite the little devil," the boo chuckled. It had to be the princess from the day before, right? He took the invite from the boo and he floated off. Waluigi plopped down onto the couch and ripped open the letter. It was a white invite card, framed with elegant squiggles to make it look formal he guessed. It was from Princess Peach of course. 'I'm invited to a playful game of tennis, a social picnic for late lunch, and to a ball. A ball?' The ball would only be held a couple days later but still, this was a lot of social events to introduce just one person, even if it was a princess. 'I guess Peach likes to go all out when it comes to social events though, she'll squeeze an event out of anything she can.' He hated to admit it, but he was actually excited to go to a social event for once. Why? Why did he want to see her so bad? Was he just desperate for a friend? Was he bored? He knew that no girl, let alone a princess, would give him the time of day, so why bother? But she winked at him, and that smile...why? Waluigi put his hand on his head and groaned. He decided to get dressed in his tennis uniform and get ready for the game. It was kind of annoying that the notice was so late but it wasn't like he had anything else planned. Waluigi woke up his brother so they could get some breakfast and get ready for the match. He explained the situation of the events and Wario gave a sly grin.
"Are you gonna talk to her?" Wario asked.
"I-I dunno, I doubt she'd talk to either of us, especially if Peach and Daisy tell her about what we've done," Waluigi said. He really hoped that he hadn't been brought up in their conversations. He knew she'd probably avoid him like the plague if she knew half the things they'd done.
"Nah Walu, chicks dig bad guys, just look at me and Mona!" Wario patted his brother on the back. He sighed. Yeah, but Mona wasn't a princess, and even then he doesn't understand how a girl could tolerate Wario and his antics. It was an anomaly, not something to be expected. The Wario Bros hopped on their motorcycles and headed down to the tennis courts. Waluigi was nervous, he wasn't a great socializer, and he was a bit temperamental. He hoped that he could make a good impression before it was tainted with the rumors of his evil-doings.
They arrived after about fifteen minutes and parked their bikes. He scanned the area for the princess, but sadly couldn't see her. After walking around the courts some more he finally saw her. She was wearing black sport shorts with white trims, and a pastel red tank top. She had her hair in a high pony tail. Even though it was up, it was long enough to twist and turn in a beautiful dance, caressing her back. He then looked at who she was with. Shit, he thought. She was chatting up the two familiar princesses and their boyfriends. Peach looked over at us and then turned to her and whispered, obviously warning her to stay away from us. 'I was probably too late, what was I thinking in the first place? Stupid Walu.' He frowned and made my way to lean against a tree near the courts, as to avoid socializing with anyone else. 'Who cares, I don't need friends anyway. I've been fine on my own with Wario anyway.' He'd play the game, eat some free food, and then leave. It was a beautiful day however, the sun's heat kissed his tan skin, but a slight breeze was there to cool him off. He closed his eyes and inhaled deeply, taking in the fresh air. The smell of spring was wonderful. "Hello?" He heard a gentle voice call out. He opened his eyes, and to his surprise, it was Princess Aria. Had they sent her over to mock him, surely she now knew of his bad reputation. Did she even remember him from the other day? Probably not.
"Hey..." He looked quizzically at the princess, his arms still crossed, body still leaned. She looked him up and down and held out her hand.
"Im Aria, I didn't catch your name the other day," she said. So she did remember.
"I'm Waluigi, but I'm sure you know that already from the princesses giving you the run down on me," he looked at the ground, annoyed. She still had her hand out, but he was too scared to meet it, he didn't want to be the butt of a joke or some obligation.
"You caught me, haha. I just thought it would be creepy if I came up and already knew your name, but you didn't know mine," she laughed nervously. She realized that he wouldn't shake her hand and decided to shake it up and down as if he did. "Well it's nice to meet you Waluigi," she gave him a closed-eyed smile. She could sense that he was very defensive, but why? Did she say something wrong? Was she being annoying? She internally freaked out a little as she wasn't the best at social situations or reading the room.
"Look, if you're here to talk out of obligation of meeting everyone and all, you can go," Waluigi spat harshly. His heart was racing. He was terrified of this interaction and the shame of her knowing all about his wrongdoings made him frustrated. The princess's smile faded. She felt bad for him. She started to think that this had less to do with her lack of social skills, and more to do with him trying to protect himself. Who hurt him to make him like this? She knew from what she'd heard from Peach that no one really liked him because he was a rotten criminal, but she needed to make sure that it wasn't something she'd said.
"Did I say something wrong?" The princess asked, with hurt in her voice.
"Wa?" Waluigi was confused. Why would she think it was her fault? Did she really just come over because she wanted to talk to him? "Ah...no I just don't know why you're talking to me. Didn't your friends tell you about me and my brother?" Waluigi asked?
"Yeah, they had quite a bit to say, but so what? I like to make judgements for myself. I know what it's like to be at the end of a bad rumor and be judged for what I've done by people who don't even take the time to know me. I don't want to be a hypocrite," she explained.
"Well they aren't gonna like the idea of you talkin' to me. A girl of high social standing talking to a criminal like me, it'll ruin your status princess," Waluigi sighed and stared off in the direction of the other princesses. Aria rolled her head back and groaned at the mention of social status. She hated it, the pressure of keeping her 'image' kept her from not acting like a pompous priss. Waluigi took notice at the princess's frustration and raised a brow.
"Don't remind me," she rolled her eyes and crossed her arms, matching him. "I can do what I want, if I get shit for it, then so be it," Waluigi was shocked at her attitude. Behind her elegant demeanor was a sassy and rebellious nature. It only made him more curious of the nymph princess. He looked at her deadpan face and got a closer look at her striking details. She didn't wear makeup, but her lips were flushed, cheeks tinted, and lashes long and dark. She was naturally beautiful, but that wasn't shocking considering her being a nymph. She stared at his features too. She adored his dark eyes, pointed ears, and soft brown hair. She found him terribly handsome, but she couldn't tell him something like that. She barely knew him.
"Hey! Aria, come on the match is about to start!" We heard Daisy yell over to us, waving her racquet high in the air. Aria broke her gaze from Waluigi's features, as did he. She blushed a little, embarrassed for staring, and grabbed his hand. She pulled him over to the court with her. All Waluigi could do was be dragged and stare at her delicate hands wrapped around his. She was touching him. It sent a bit of electricity through his hand and spread across his body. Daisy and the others waved her over with a smile, but almost in sync, their expression changed to concerned ones. The Mario Bros exchanged confused glances, Peach looked nervous, and Daisy looked pissed. There were not so silent whispers from toads and other citizens making their way to their ears. 'What is the princess doing?' 'Is she okay?' 'Did he force her to hold his hand?' 'It's that no good criminal.' Waluigi always ignored their insults, and he continued to do so, but Aria was shocked. She didn't know people were this openly horrible to Waluigi. It saddened her deeply but also explained his reserved nature. No wonder he's so hostile. If he didn't have a wall so high, he'd be broken by all these words. She looked over at Waluigi who looked genuinely disinterested by all the gossip. How was he okay with this?
