In The Shadows

Prologue

She walked inside her penthouse on the top floor of a thirty storey building.

To say her day was exhausting would be an understatement and all she wanted was to see his smile of his favourite person.

As cheesy as it sounds, he somehow managed to end her shittiest day with a peaceful night.

Why is the door unlocked? Is he home early?
she smiled thinking that he was home earlier than her for a change. It lifted her mood already.

The lights were off, she turned on the lights in the kitchen and poured herself a glass of water.

She went to their room looking for him.

"Babe? Where are you?", she called for him but there wasn't any response. Looking around she found no trace of him.

"I hate surprises you know", her voice boomed through the house but there wasn't a single sound in her response.

Just then her phone rang. She went to the kitchen and picked it up.

"Hey", he said with so much ease making her look around but this time her heart started to pound with sudden uneasiness.

"Where are you?", she closed her waiting for him to respond and end whatever prank he was playing on her.

"I'll be coming home late tonight. I'm still at work, so don't wait up okay?", her heart dropped at his words.

"Wait! You aren't at home?", she could feel her limbs going numb with terror, "but the door was unlocked."

"What? That can't be. I am sure I locked it", she wasn't listening anymore.

It can't be.

"Hello? Babe? You there?", the worry in his voice matched her anxiousness

The voice coming from the phone was the only source of her safety as she held it in her hand and tried to go outside slowly picking up her car keys.

She tried to move quietly, suspicious of the intruder who still might have his eyes on her.

She was moving to the door when someone grabbed her from the hair and held her in a firm grip making her gasp.

"But I love surprises.", he whispered in her ear making her keys fall from her hands.

Before she could do anything, hard metal hit the back of her head making her loose all consciousness.
