How had this changed in a matter of a few hours? She asked herself again and again.
Her heart hammered against her chest and her breath was stuck in her throat. She had lost all hope the moment Nick didn't open his eyes when she yelled his name and clenched his hand. The paramedics had came quickly and she had joined him inside the ambulance while the blonde woman named Kate, according to Steve, had stayed behind.
Now she was standing before a glass wall with doctors operating Nick on the other side.Steve and Maria were also there with her along with a fee more agents and Rumlow, they didn't utter a word to each other feeling that silence right now would be better than words. She didn't knew which emotion to put first, anger or sadness. Her eyes stung with tears she didn't knew if she should release them now.
The door beside them suddenly opened and Natasha joined them,a worried expression across her face as she looked at Nick's situation. She was glad she hadn't noticed her yet.Any communication with humans right now felt so unnecessary for her."Is he gonna make it?"she asked Steve in a hushed voice, her Russian accent breaking slightly.
"I don't know."Steve replied back in a silent tone.
"Tell me about the shooter."said the redhead again.
"He's fast and strong."Steve shook his head slightly."Had a metal arm."Maria stood inbetween her and Natasha, with her own concerned expression on.
"Ballistics?"Natasha asked, her head slightly turning to give a quick glance to Maria.
"Three slugs,no rifling.Completely untraceable."Maria replied as her eyes remained forward.
"Soviet-made."the redhead commented her eyebrows furrowing.
"Yeah."Maria nodded as she turned to look at Natasha.
Everyone's eyes quickly turned to Nick as one of the machines started to beep loudly.Something was wrong. His heart was failing him.Her fists clenched tightly on her sides as doctors rushed around him.
"Don't do this to me Nick."Natasha muttered quietly in a shaky voice. The doctor quickly pulled out a machine that she guessed quickly with her hazy brain shocked the patient into making his heart work again. They did it once.
"Pulse?"asked a doctor.
"No pulse."replied another.
They did it a second time.
"Negative."
"Don't do this to me,Nick.Don't do this to me."Natasha muttered again in a shaky voice.
Silence.
"What's the time?"asked a doctor.
Valerie blocked any other sound around her.Hot tears running down her eyes as she quickly exited the room. She took in a shaky breath as she leaned against the wall outside of Nick's surgery room. She let herself slowly slid down until she was sitting on the floor, knees pulled close to her chest and head buried between them. Her shoulders shook from the quiet sobs she let out.
Nick was the next person she had as a close friend. She might not knew him very well as maybe her father did but he was the one who had taken her in when she had followed Clint that night two years ago.He gave her a room to stay,a secret identity to protect her and so many advices.Even now when he had called after two years he was looking out for her, making sure her name and identity were safe.
But now that he was dead what was her place? What did she do from now?Did she had to go back to the safe house?Or stay here until someone told her?Did she tell anyone about Nick's situation?
So many questions run through her mind that she just let them consume her.As a question formed she let another tear out.Her heart was in such pain. This was the second death of someone close to her, happening right in front of her eyes.First Phil and now him.
