"Hello?"
"It was about damn time."said the caller in his deep voice.
"Nick?"Valerie asked confused as she was both fascinated with the way a single screen worked as a phone and how clearly she could hear him."But how-?"
"You don't notice a hell lot of things kid, that's a bad start."the man chuckled.
"Yeah well would you be surprised if I said I had no idea of this screen for two years?"she asked as she pushed some of the hair behind her ear.Nick laughed from the other side, imagining him shaking his head.
"How are you holding up?"Valerie shrugged but mentally slapped herself since he couldn't see her.
"Fine I guess.Tony made me earpieces and I can hear now. It's been...quiet around here."she sighed softly.
"I'm aware."he replied. She didn't knew what he was aware of exactly, her earpieces or being quiet for two years straight in the safe house.Maybe both."But believe me when I say that S.H.I.E.L.D. is never quiet."
"Well a little noise isn't bad sometimes."Valerie shrugged again.
"That's what I needed to hear. What!?"he yelled inside the phone making her jump slightly. He was apparently talking to someone who had called for him.He returned back to her sighing and cursing silently under his breath."Apologies about that, just getting forward with a mission.Which brings me to you."
"Me?"
"Yes."he simply replied."Correct me if I'm wrong but Hawkeye has been there more than usual."
"Well he went to two missions but nothing big from what I imagined."the brunette replied, leaning her back to her bed pillows.
"That's because they are looking for you, kid."Nick replied in a more serious voice. Her eyebrows shot up."Not knowing your identity makes you a threat to S.H.I.E.L.D.You could be a criminal and just helping the situation when Loki released those shitty creatures. Not knowing also makes higher level people scared and angry."
"But I'm not a threat to anyone."Valerie replied still trying to process the news inside her head.
"As I said, they don't know that.Only a select of handful people know how you look and an even smaller group knows who you really are."Nick shuffled slightly from the other side, she imagined he was getting comfortable on his desk."Clint asked me personally to leave his missions just to protect you, back in New York."
"But it's been two years..."
"Records don't leave S.H.I.E.L.D. only repeat."she imagined him raising his dark eyebrow slightly at this sentence. She stayed silent for a few seconds trying to process everything.
"So what now?"
"The Head of S.H.I.E.L.D. wants to meet you."he replied to her question so calmly yet tightly, she was sure Nick would laugh at her shocked face.
"Aren't you the Head of S.H.I.E.L.D.?"she asked confused as she gathered her knees close to her chest. He laughed lightly.
"I'm just a Director, kid.I point to people, order them and they do it.Years of practice but they do obey, sometimes."he replied to her small question which was kinda childish now in her head, making her slightly embarrassed.
"Must be the eye patch."she muttered quietly. The man laughed again from the other side.
"Now you sound like Clint."her heart wrenched just slightly at the mention of her father."So what say you?"
She stayed silent once more weighting her options. This was another adventure, not like the one before but it was a smaller one.She was just going to meet someone.A higher level from Nick, kinda like the CEO of S.H.I.E.L.D.Maybe he could clear the matter of her not being a criminal and then she would be recognized as a hero as well. That sounded simple.
