Fire burns. Ash fills the air. Darkness surrounds us.
Flashes of orange, stokes of death, flaming spheres crash upon the fortress.
There is another slam against the mighty gates of the white city, turned grey by the night. They have started to hammer down the doors of our fortress and so our hope. And they have begun to thrust fireballs over the walls and into the lower residence.
I stand on a piece of rubble, higher than the men that stand beneath me. The men are quiet... Holding their breath. There is a breeze that blows back my white hair from my dirty face... And the flags of Gondor that stand tall above the inhabitance.
Legolas stands by my side, awaiting the shadow that dares to enter the kingdom.
"I do not know if we can hold the city in time for our allies," he says quiet enough for only me to hear.
I look at him. "Doesn't matter. If we can't defend this kingdom you can be sure we'll avenge it."
"If we die here I want you to know how much I love you." He still looks ahead.
"It is not more than I," I respond, taking his tensed hand to rub my thumb over it.
He almost hints at a smile... but one that only touches his lips.
I draw my sword and Legolas pulls out an arrow as another bang knocks wood from the gates down to the ground.
I hear Gandalf pull out the Foehammer blade from his belt as the men prepare for what is to come.
"Steady," the wizard says. "Steady."
Finally the wolf's head breaks a mighty hole into the wooden gate, the flames from the weapon's mouth licking the nose of Grond. It pulls back and we all ready ourselves, awaiting the final hammer to our doom.
"You are soldiers of Gondor," Gandalf says. "No matter what comes through that gate, you will stand your ground!"
Just then the gates burst open, revealing three massive trolls three times the size of any others, wielding blunt weapons and wearing iron helmets, roaring with fury, ready to kill. Following them, come the orcs and goblins... An army only bred to destroy the world of men and the rest of us after.
Legolas lets an arrow fly into the mouth of a howling troll. But it swings its mighty hammer and takes out our men by the wave.
I charge into the battle field, shoving past running men who get taken down by the large monsters. I leap to the head troll as he swings his weapon and jump onto the hammer. Just as he brings it above his head I hop onto the troll's back, savagely stabbing through its thick skin with my sword. Legolas gets an arrow into one's eye behind me before it kills me with its ax
But the beast swings again.
I leap off the troll and do a roll on the floor to reduce the impact of the landing, just in time for the troll behind me to stab the one's back where I was.
