Jake's P.O.V.
"Bye! Don't faint again!" I called after Mary as she ran away.
"No I was planning on doing that next week!" She called back. 'Ugh that girl. That crazy yet amazing girl' I thought. I went to the counter to make sure they new Mary and I were both leaving. Well, in Mary's case she already left.
I decided to head home afterwards and I had two things on my mind. One, how furious my mom is gonna be when she finds out how much money I spent. and two, the weird feeling I got right before I left school. I started getting a strange feeling that something bad was gonna happen. I mean it may not sound weird when I describe it like that but it just gets weirder. I thought that the something bad thing was gonna happen to Mary. Like she was gonna get hurt or something. And she did! I found her lying unconscious near the park. She was walking home but she ended up fainting. I was creeped out How did I know that something was gonna happen to her? I kept thinking about when I walked through the door but when then it left my mind. The in front of me was my mother fuming.
"What did you do with the money?!?!!" My mother screamed louder than she ever has.
"I'll tell you once you stop screaming!" I yelled back at her but not as loud.
"DO NOT tell me what to do!! Now answer me! WHAT DID YOU DO WITH THE MONEY?!?!!" She screeched louder than before. 'I'm gonna go deaf after this' I thought.
"I was helping Mary!!" I answered her with more force than I thought I had, " I saw her unconscious on the side of the road with a little blood around her and took her to the hospital!!! Did you expect me to leave her there like that?!?!" I knew I shouldn't have yelled as loud as I did but I couldn't help it. I liked Mary more than a friend and couldn't stand to leave her alone in the state she was in. Heck I wouldn't do that to anybody!
"Jake! Do you realize how much money you spent?! If you took her to the hospital but didn't pay I would be fine with that but to spend that kind of money without my approval is unacceptable! I know you were trying to help Mary but you have to be smart about this! We aren't made of money." I could tell she was trying to calm down and I understood what she was saying. My family wasn't that wealthy or had a lot of money. In fact my mom wasn't able to get me a phone until the summer after my sophomore year because we didn't have the money. It all started when my dad died. He made most of the money but when he died my mom had to get a full time job and hire a nanny since she couldn't be a stay at home mom anymore. My dad also didn't leave us with much money right when he died so we had to turn to family friends for a few months so we wouldn't have to live on the streets.
"I know I'm sorry I just... I didn't know what happened to her and I-I'm sorry." I looked at the ground.
"I know. I'm sorry I yelled like that it's just. We aren't paid well and I'm afraid we wont be able to afford food anymore. I just cant spend that money." She said obviously sorry.
"I know. How about I apply for a job that pays well-ish? I'm 16 almost 17 so I can actually get a job that pays. And I can drive myself. I will make up the money I spend and help to get more and better food at the table." I suggested.
"Oh Jake thank you! How about we apply for jobs in the morning?" My mom responded happy that she wouldn't be the only provider for the family anymore.
"Perfect. I'm gonna go to my room now. See you at dinner." I said as I retreated to my room.
When I got to my room I turned on my console to my x box and started playing fortnite. (Ok I know almost nothing about x boxes and stuff so excuse me on that note. However I know a little bit about fornite because my brother is obsessed.) My mom was able to afford it thankfully but I had to pay half because we still needed more money for it if we were gonna have lunch during the day. It was cheaper than most because we bought all the stuff used and the rule is that I don't play it a whole lot so the bill stays low.
I was still on my first round when my head started to hurt. It wasn't awful but it was enough to make me get aspirin from the kitchen downstairs. I stood up and dint even walk two steps when I noticed a small bright light from the corner of my eye. I turned around in 2 full circles before realizing it was coming from my ring that I inherited from my dad when he died. I was confused. I moved my hand in circles to see if the light was being reflected on my ring from the sun. Nope. Suddenly the glow on my ring burst. I yelled putting my other hand to my eyes to keep me from going blind. When the light was gone I looked at my hand. 'What the?' I thought when I saw my hand. My hand and arm was covered in black. I ran to my mom's bedroom to look in her mirror.
"Oh sick!" I whisper yelled. I was wearing an all black leather suit with black boots and gloves. There was also a mask covering the top half of my face. My normally combed blonde hair was now a rat's nest. As I looked closer I saw an A printed in right on my shoulder. Once I saw it I thought I was dreaming. A as in Augur? That famous legend like the Oracle one? Augur was the second most famous legend in the world. Sure there were different versions but the concept was the same. The story of Augur is similar to the story of Oracle. A boy found a creature who was magical. The creature possessed power that was needed to be given to a human who would save the world from harm. The creature thought that the boy would be the perfect person to be granted that power. The boy was given the power to know when and where someone was hurt even if he was thousands of miles away. The boy named himself Augur like he knew the future which technically wasn't true. However it seemed a fitting name for his power. As I looked in the mirror I heard some noise. I turned around to see a floating creature who was trying to eat my mom's perfume bottle.
"Oh hey kid. Do you got anything to eat? I'm starving."
