The lights became even more dim inside of the club and everyone's attention was now towards the stage. The man smiling and standing proudly was given a brief introduction as Jervis Tetch. A world-renowned hypnotist. His name would never leave your mind. "Jervis Tetch" you whispered to yourself. "It has a nice ring to it." You got up from your spot at the bar and started walking cautiously towards the stage, not wanting to get noticed by anyone but wanting to get a better view of his act.
"You sir." His voice quieted everyone down. "Beautiful suit!" he continued. "Thank you." The volunteer spoke in a slightly hesitant voice. "A lawyer?" Their exchange continued. "A doctor." Jervis continued and asked about the woman the volunteer was standing with. "Your mistress?" "No, that's my wife..." You cringed out of embarrassment. "Yikes." You spoke to yourself. Luckily, Jervis played it off well "Oh delightful," he responded nonchalantly. After this, a small ticking sound could be heard. A small silver pocket watch was now brought into the equation. Jervis began speaking again. "Listen to the watch. The way its ticking synchronizes with your heartbeat. Look into my eyes, not above them, not around them, but deep into their center. You are completely relaxed and are becoming weightless. Are you ready to do something impossible?¨ The volunteer replied with a simple "yes." He seemed to be in a clone like a state. Jervis closed his watch and walked to the side of the stage. The crowd was deadly silent, you could hear a pin drop. A chair was brought out. ¨Stand upon the chair." Jervis spoke in an authoritative voice. The man stepped up onto the chair. "No, the back of it." "Oh shit." you said, speaking to yourself once again. "Remember, you weigh nothing at all." "He will fall!" The man's wife said, obviously concerned. "Not at all, my dear." Jervis said reassuringly. He gave a little laugh "Oh my god he is the cutest" Wait. What the hell did you just say? Are you falling for this guy that you haven't even had an interaction with? Yeah, that sounds like you. Then, all of a sudden the man stood on the back of the chair like it was nothing! The crowd was astonished. You yourself were amazed, to say the least. Jervis's act was extremely impressive! You imagined yourself up there on the chair, falling on your face. You let out a laugh. Jervis then assisted the man off of the chair and broke him out of his trance. The man looked horribly confused but gave a small smile as the crowd cheered for him. He went back to the audience and walked back over to his wife, giving her the biggest hug.
Jervis bowed. A couple of seconds later the crowd quieted down in anticipation for the next part of his act. "I will need one more volunteer for tonight" he shouted. When he said this, you held your breath. You wanted him to pick you but you also...didn't? You would love to have an exchange with him given that fact that he was so intriguing but you were not ready to be on a stage, in front of people for God's sake. There were a thousand thoughts running through your head. You took a quick breath. Whatever happens, happens. He walked through the audience again, but this time he made his choice a lot quicker. "You miss." He said in his glorious, melodic voice. No way, there was no way. Was he pointing at you? "Me?" you said shyly. "Yes, you." Your mind went blank and you just stood there, frozen in front of everyone. This could not be happening.
