Wild, red eyes lunged at me, a guttural growl erupting from the large creature.

The scream was stuck in my throat and I tried to run away.

Something grabbed my ankles and dragged me to the ground.

I kicked and thrashed, trying to drag myself free.

Pain flared in my body, the scream finally shaking free.

Darkness surrounded me, red flowing everywhere.

I kept fighting, my hands clawing at what I couldn't see.

Her face appeared, blackish-red running down her chin from her mouth, her clothes wet with red.

Her hands reaching out to grab me, pull me down with her.

Red. A lot of red, staining my own hands.

The body staring back at me, the look of fear frozen on the face that I couldn't see through all the red.

"You're a monster. You did this to me."

The voice I couldn't place echoed in my head.

I cringed and more red blurred around me, coating me from head to toe.

I felt the scream rip through my throat, my body springing up from my mattress in a cold sweat. My hands beat about my body, like I was trying to push something off of me, while sobs left my throat.

There was a crash and heavy footsteps running to me as I writhed under my blankets. A pair of arms wrapped around me and pulled me against the body they belonged to. I sobbed and tried to pull free.

"Sarah, honey, it's me. It's okay. You're safe."

My entire body went limp in my dad's arms and I sobbed harder, shaking like I had hypothermia. My hands clung to his bicep, wrapped around me like a protective shell. The way he rocked me gently and slowly back and forth reminded me of a time when I was fifteen and again when I was sixteen.

I hated that he had to see me break down the way I did because I was sure that it was reminding him of the same things. I thought that it was over, that I wouldn't have another nightmare again.

"It's okay," he whispered softly as he rocked me.

Even though I hadn't had a nightmare since I was seventeen, he seemed to have found it easy to fall back into the same routine he had back then. The way he consoled me and held onto me to make me feel safe, it took me back to being a teenager.

"You're safe, Sarah."

I sniffled as my sobs stopped, but I didn't want to let my dad go. He stopped rocking me but he didn't let me go either.
