He glanced over at the clock for the third time in the past twenty minutes. It was 8:27 and Phil said he would be home by 8. PJ wanted Dan home thirty minutes ago and kept texting him, asking if he had left yet. Dan adjusted the way he was sitting on the plush couch, the glow from the yellow lamp cast an orange look over the dark living room. After Mrs. Lester stormed upstairs, he didn't see her for the rest of the night. What a wonderful mom she was. No wonder Phil hired a babysitter, no wonder she had to make him hire a boy. With a woman like that Phil would be jumping at a chance to leave.

Dan's ears perked up when he heard the lock slide out of its place, then the long whine of the front door followed by a, "Damn, I really need to get that fixed." The older man stepped inside the house, shutting the door behind him. He smiled once he saw Dan, his eyes tired by his smile was much more awake. "I'm sorry about that," Phil spoke first. "I thought I'd be home earlier but they had an emergency meeting." He slung his coat over his shoulder and hung it on the peg by the doorway.

"That's okay. Ant and I had dinner at 4:30 then I had him down by 6:30."

"That's perfect. Did you meet the Mrs's?" He cringed, bracing himself for the worst.

"Yeah. She told me I looked too poor to work here," Dan laughed, finding the whole interaction funny. How could a woman be so mean to someone she just met?

"Oh, geez. I'm sorry. She can be..." He trailed off, searching for the word.

"Abrasive?"

"Yes." He smiled shyly, like a little boy on his first date. In this lighting and that smile, he looked much younger and much softer. His tie was loose around his neck and his shirt was untucked. Rough day?

"I have to go, it was nice meeting you. Ant is a lovely boy." The younger boy said, straightening himself and heading for the door.

"Yes, he is bright. And you too, Dan." The younger boy slipped past Phil, but before he could put the door between him, Mr. Lester spoke up again. "Oh, Dan. Don't change for her, I like the way you dress. It adds element." His smile was tired, from here Dan could see how age was packed onto the man's shoulders. He was still handsome, the brunet never doubted that for a minute.

"Thank you." Then he shut the door in hopes to hide his blush in the darkness of outside.
