"The court will resume after recess at 1:45." The Judge announced, banging his mallet on the wooden peg. Everyone stood to their feet, Haillie throwing a glare at Daniel over her shoulder as she beelined to the door.
Phil spoke in hushed voices with his lawyer before the man walked away, Phil turning and closing the distance between him and the brunet. "Thank you," he mumbled into Daniel's hair as he pulled his smaller body into his chest. Dan breathed in his scent, nuzzling into the older man, he wanted nothing more than to be curled up next to him. "Are you hungry? I'm starving," the older man asked once they pulled away.
"I'm so hungry," Dan answered.
They walked in comfortable silence until they broke through the court doors and outside, the leaves had started falling and the wind picked up, blowing Dan's hair right into his eyes. They crossed the parking lot until they made it into Phil's slick black car.
"Can I ask you a personal question?" Dan asked as Phil pulled out of the lot and onto the road.
"Oh geez, I already know where this is going, but yes."
"What happened to you and your dad? He said you and your mom still talk." The brunet followed the cars on the lane beside them, watching them speed up only to come to a stop at the red light.
Phil sighed, taking a left, Daniel was mesmerized by the way his hands moved on the wheel.
"You know how my dad set up Haillie and me on a date? Well, the story is a little different than that. I came out to my family once I was out of the house and had a job because growing up they were- and still are- very religious. I came out to my mom as bisexual first, because at the time I still enjoyed girls, ya know?" he looked over at Dan to see if he was still paying attention, Daniel nodded along as he continued.
"She was obviously over the moon happy for me, I don't know why I was scared to tell her, she's such a sweet woman and I couldn't have wanted anyone else in my corner than her. BUT, then it was time to tell my dad. He told me I was going to hell, that I was choosing this lifestyle- which by the way I HATE that argument, who the hell would want to get murdered, stoned, fired, disowned, etc. Anyways, we stopped talking for obvious reasons. They're still married, my mom always invites me to family reunions and stuff but I always make time for her alone before the holiday's, she's the only one I really want to see."
"I'm really sorry, Phil," Dan said once the older man let out a deep sigh.
"Oh that's alright," he waved off Daniel's words with a smile. "I only need 3 people now."
"Who's that?"
"My mom, Ant, and... you." He smiled again, looking over at Daniel who only had a grin to match. Phil took Dan's hand in his own, placing their conjoined hands on the older man's thigh, they smiled in silence like the idiots they were.

"Oh, wait, I never got to ask you a personal question." Phil's voice rang out through the speaker on Daniel's phone.
"Oh yeah? What?" The brunet was sitting on the kitchen counter, PJ had gone out with his friends who didn't drink, so Dan didn't have to worry. He had a bowl of Mac n' Cheese on top of his thighs.
"Have you come out to your family yet? If you don't mind me asking."
Dan paused, laughing a humorless chuckle, shaking his head even though Phil couldn't see. "Yeah. Didn't go too good though,"
"Can I know what happened?"
"I figured out I liked boys at fourteen, and I figured out I couldn't come out at fifteen. Like you, I was raised pretty religiously. Except, no one came around for me. I'll save you the bullying and the teasing and the emo years, but when I did finally come out- a couple of months ago- my dad stopped paying for my tuition. And I had to find a job. And I found you. So I guess, everything worked out, huh?"
"I'm really sorry, hon. I don't think God hates you for being gay. I think people just hate themselves, so they twist words and Bible passages just so they can single people out. And once they've singled you out, it's easier to break you down and force you to their will. Or their religion. I'm not bashing Catholicism or Christianity, I still personally believe in God, but if you can allow yourself to use negative words against someone when they're vulnerable, you're a different kind of person, and I don't think God would want that."
"Thank you," Dan mumbled, wiping his eyes with the back of his hand.
"For what, love?"
"Being my safe place."
