Dan opened the door with his new silver key, stepping into the landing and calling up the stairs for Ant that he had arrived. He had been babysitting for Phil for a couple of months now, the pair had a normal boss-employee relationship, friendly but still awkward when they were around. He kicked off his shoes and padded around the living room, gathering up the toys that were astray and re-arranging the living room. Anthony hadn't come running down the stairs yet so he was sure that the baby was passed out in his bed from his normal afternoon sugar crash.
The boy made his way up the stairs, counting the doors as he went. He didn't see Mrs. Lester's car in the garage when he cut through into the house, that he was thankful for. Haillie had somehow found out Daniel was gay, making slight homophobic comments just to push his buttons whenever she was around. He frowned when he saw that Phil's office door was open, he peered inside, his eyes widening when he saw Phil posted at his desk, earbuds in and hands typing feverishly against the keyboard. Why was he here? He wore blue flannel pajama pants and a tight white shirt that hugged his biceps, his chest contracting as he keyed onto his computer.
"Phil?" Dan asked. The older man didn't respond. Daniel wasn't allowed inside Phil's office, he had made that clear the first day he showed up, so stepping into his office wasn't something that popped into his mind at first. He called again but louder, waving his hand, the motion catching Phil off guard. He smiled as he pulled out his earbuds, the music was faint in the air, barely audible.
"Hey, Dan, sorry I didn't hear you come in."
"It's okay. What are you doing here?" The brunet was still hanging onto the door frame, careful not to step even an inch inside the room. He wasn't afraid of Phil, but he was definitely intimidated. A very rich and successful, handsome older man told him not to do one thing in the house and that was go into his office, he certainly wasn't going to break that rule. To say that Daniel was fond of Phil would be an understatement, he hated to admit it but he looked forward to his ten minutes conversations with Mr. Lester at the end of the day. He had found out a lot about the older man, he was 31 and worked as a lawyer defending people who got screwed over by the government. He was too sweet to be married to a woman like Haillie and was too nice to even tolerate Daniel and his questions. What kind of cases do you get put on? Have you worked with anyone successful? How did you and Haillie meet? The boy tended to ask a lot of questions whenever he spoke to Phil, it was a nervous habit that he needed to get under control.
"Oh, please come in, I'm sorry." Phil quickly rushed out, noticing the way the younger boy was leaning farther and farther into the room without moving. He straightened up and closed his laptop, watching as Dan slid into the chair across from him. "I had the day off, actually. And I was going to tell you not to come in but I, unfortunately, lost your number." He smiled sheepishly like he was an embarrassed high-schooler.
"I can give it to you again if you'd want?" Dan squeezed out, his throat tight, scratching the back of his neck out of habit.
"That would be very helpful," Phil leaned closer in his chair, digging through all of his loose papers to try and find one that he could use to jot down the boy's number. He found purchase on a notepad, clicking on a pen and sliding the pad towards Daniel. Phil hummed as he watched the younger boy write down the digits, Dan smiling as he looked up, sliding the pad back to Mr. Lester. "Thank you."
"Do I need to leave? Or is there anything I could do for extra pay?"
"Oh, yeah. Well, Ant should be awake in a couple of hours, until then I think there's a little bit to do. I'd feel bad making you do chores but I'd also feel bad making you come all of the ways here."
"Oh no, please, I'd do anything for a little extra change," Dan admitted.
"Really? Where do you live? I suppose I don't know anything about you besides you watch my son every night." Dan watched as Phil leaned back in his chair, kicking his socked feet up against his desk, his arms snapped behind his neck and propping his head up.
"I'm a uni student, I live with my friend PJ in our dorm."
"That it? What are you studying? Do you have a family? Siblings? What do you like to do for fun? How old are you?" Phil rapid fired, cocking his head to the side and watching as Dan's face split into confusion, then shock.
"Oh. I'm studying law, it's my fourth year in uni, I'm 24, I have one sibling- his name is Adrian. And I have a family, but I just recently lost all contact with them." Dan mumbled the last part, pulling his lips into a tight line.
"Oh really? You know I'm a layer? What type of cases do you want to work on? I'm really sorry to hear about your family, that's just terrible. I'm so sorry."
"It's okay, they were homophobic so I don't really mind not having their rude remarks all the time. But I still miss them," Dan frowned, biting his lip.
"No, I understand that. Homophobic people make so sense to me, why can't you just not worry about what other people do with their lives?"
Dan let out a small chuckle. "Right, exactly."
"Anyway, I'm sorry I wasted your time. I have a couple of things I need tidying up around here, if you need absolutely anything just let me know. Also, don't work too hard, you don't have to work at all if you don't want to. Just pretend to incase Haillie comes home." Phil chuckled, standing up to stretch his legs, Dan doing the same.
"Yeah, alright. Thank you, Mr. Lester." He went to turn to leave but Phil stopped him.
"Dan? It's just Phil, please."
