Their hands were clasped together as they walked into the church they wanted to get married on, Phil pressed the lock button on his key fob and smiling over at his fiance as he gazed at the stain-glassed windows and cathedral pillars.
"I haven't been to a church in years," Dan mumbled, eyes still trained on the beautiful architect of the outside.
"Do you still want to do it here?" Phil asked, tracing the way Dan's expression shifted.
"I mean - you want to," Dan bit his lip, finally looking at the older man. "And I want to do what you want to do."
"Hon, we don't have to do to it in a church if it makes you uncomfortable."
"It doesn't make me uncomfortable... it's just -"
"It makes you uncomfortable?" Phil says once again, watching Daniel's doe eyes dart around anywhere but Phil's.
The younger boy opens his mouth then closes it again and again, like a fish out of water, before he finally lets out a sigh and looks up at his lover with a small nod. "It's beautiful, Phil, really. I just don't have nice experiences with the church..."
"That's why I wanted to come here to see if you actually liked it or not. We can do whatever, but can we check it out a little?" Phil asked tentatively.
"Yeah, of course," Dan gave a sad smile, squeezing Phil's hand three times.
Dan followed the older boy into the church, they had set up a reservation to come and look at it, so when they arrived the pastor was waiting for them. He pulled his head out of the pews, he was bent down to grab some discarded trash that some Sunday boys probably left.
"Oh, hello," he smiled, adjusting his collar. He strode over to Dan and Phil to greet them, the older man brought his hand out to shake the Father's hand. "You must be Dan and Phil, welcome to our Chapel." His smile was so wide Dan wondered why he was so happy.
Phil pulled Dan around as the Father spoke about all of the interesting facts about their church, but Dan's eyes were locked onto the colorful windows that held pictures of Mary and Jesus and the Nobel men. All of those times of sitting in the pews and feeling shame crush down on his chest tried to knock him down, but he squeezed Phil's hand harder and laid his head on the man's shoulder like a bored child at the movies.
Phil glanced down at the brunet, Daniel watching the way his Adam's apple bobbed as his spoke. Finally, Phil said goodbye to the man and they walked through the big wooden doors once again.
In the car, Dan watched the church fly out of view as they drove down the road. "Where do you want to get married at, Dan?"
"I really want to go to Japan." He mumbled, looking up at his fiance.
"Japan, it is." Phil smiled.
