"you often meet your fate on a road you take to avoid it"

The dimly lit cafe seemed to grow darker as time progressed and night took over. Should I stay or should I go now? If I go, there will be trouble. And if I stay it will be double. I hummed along to the song thats been playing on repeat in my mind for the past few days. I rolled my eyes and let out a sigh as I thought about how it related to my current situation.

As I took another bite out of my glazed doughnut, a soft breeze touched my skin, signaling that the door had opened. I glanced over my shoulder and watched as a boy sat two seats away from me.

The boy tapped the bell on the counter impatiently and sighed. Tired and bored, I rested my head in my palm and closed my eyes for a few seconds. When I reopened them, I noticed that another person had joined the boy and I at the counter.

There was a rustle of dishes followed by footsteps as an old woman wearing an awful pink uniform stepped out from the back of the old cafe.

"Sorry, sink was clogged." The lady spoke as she took out a pen and notepad. "So, what'll it be?"

The old man, who had just walked in, put down the newspaper he was currently reading and answered, "Uh, give me a chocolate éclair."

"Mm-hmm. Sure." The waitress in pink quickly scribbled down the man's order and then looked up again. "Can I get the kid a glass of milk or something?"

The brunette sitting next to the older man scoffed, "The kid wants coffee. Black."

Surprised by the boy's sarcasm, the woman turned back to the man and chuckled awkwardly, "Cute kid."

The man just nodded slightly and glimpsed back up at the waitress uncomfortably. She turned to look at the ' kid' again and he let out a toothy grin. I laughed softly, which caused the boy to watch me for a few seconds.

"Okay." The woman looked at the ground and whispered to herself before walking away to prepare the orders.

The boy sighed and looked around the shadowy cafe.

"Don't remember this place being such a shithole."

I faced him and a small laugh escaped my lips. I thought to myself, don't remember this place at all...

"I used to come here as a kid. Used to sneak out with my brothers and sisters and eat doughnuts till we puked."

I tilted my head in confusion as I thought about his words.

He smirked and made eye contact with me, "Simpler times, huh?"

Not quite sure what to say, I replied with a nod, "Yeah.. simpler times."
