Chapter 19 ~ Winning Is Everything

Shuichi stared up in fear at Katio, who had his sword raised with a red glint in his eyes. Kokichi glared, kicking his legs in desperation. If only he'd have Kaito on his knees begging for mercy. He gave Shuichi a fearful look, scared to know what would happen to him. Shuichi saw his glance, deciding to act before thinking and jump onto Kaito, clinging to his arm that held the sword. Kaito froze, giving a confused look.

"What do you think you're doing," Kaito growled, narrowing his eyes.

Shuichi gulped before speaking. "D-Don't you dare kill him." He had attempted making his voice deeper, trying to seem scary, but the stutter in his voice ruined that effect.

"Excuse me?"

"You heard me. Please... don't kill Kokichi..." He lost control of his voice, it cracking as tears started forming in his eyes. "I... I can't handle him dying again."

Kaito stared in annoyance. But as Shuichi began to cry, his expression changed to shock. "What is wrong with you? I'd think you don't know how this world works with this reaction."

"W-What?"

"Because he doesn't," Kokichi spoke up, rolling his eyes. "He isn't from this world, idiot." He felt as if this should be common knowledge by now considering Shuichi must be the talk around the kingdoms.

Kaito turned to Kokichi, staring a couple seconds before looking back at Shuichi. He was obviously trying to understand what Kokihi said. Eventually, it clicked.

"You're the outsider," he asked, raising an eyebrow.

Shuichi hesitantly nodded, wondering if it would make him a target.

"Wait... seriously? Awesome! Hey, could you explain to me what an outsider is?" He seemed to have forgotten Kokichi, loosening his grip and putting his sword away.

"Uh.... well," Shuichi started, giving a nervous laugh. "I'm not too sure. I guess it just means I'm from a different world."

"A different world, huh? What's it like?" Kaito's eyes lit up with interest, trying to imagine what it looks like.

Shuichi shrugged. "Pretty normal I guess. Then again you all seem to run on a different 'normal.'"

Kokichi bit Kaito's arm, earning his freedom to stand next to Shuichi. Kaito glared at him, then Shuichi. He couldn't understand why these two were friends considering they seemed different. And for some reason, he didn't like it. It felt like Kokichi won something he didn't. Why was the outsider Kokichi's friend and not his? This wouldn't do.

Kokichi noticed Kaito's sudden change, grabbing Shuichi's arm and starting to lead him away. They didn't get far before Kaito grabbed onto Shuichi, yanking him away from Kokichi. Shuichi's eyes widen as he began to kick and scream, not trusting this Kaito at all. Kokichi charged at him, prepared to fight once more.

Both stopped when Kaito pulled out his sword, raising it to Shuichi's neck. He smirked, loving their fearful expressions as they waited to see what he would do. That fear must mean something. Perhaps death was different for outsiders? That didn't surprise him considering Shuichi's reaction. What did stand out was how Kokichi reacted. His expression was pale, almost like he was reliving an event in his head.

That's when it hit Kaito. They've been in this situation before. All three of them.

His smile widened as he put the sword closer to Shuichi's neck, letting out a chuckle when Kokichi tensed.

"This one interest me," Kaito said. "So I'll be borrowing him!"

Shuichi was shaking, starting to struggle again. But Kokichi didn't move, his face getting paler.

"Don't worry! I promise not to kill him. Well, as long as you don't try anything."

Kaito stared into Kokichi's eyes, daring him to try something. But Kokichi just gave into defeat, too scared to attempt anything. He stared at Shuichi, wishing he could telepathically talk to him, telling him he would be alright. Despite no words being exchanged, Shuichi knew what was going to happen, giving up his struggle.

Realizing he won, Kaito picked Shuichi up over his shoulder, beginning to walk away. Shuichi looked up at Kokichi one last time, but Kokichi didn't do the same. Instead, he stared at the ground, already plotting how he was going to get Shuichi back.
