There I was sat in Doctor Hughs's office. He had called with some news and Sammy dropped me off before heading to his friend's house for a sleepover. A fly was buzzing around in the room, annoying me. The buzzing filled the silence within the room. Dr Hugh walked in with a folder and sat behind his desk on his swivelling chair. He cleared his throat, rested his arms on the table and looked me dead in the eye.
"Before we get discussing, how are you doing?"
"I think I'm getting better. I'm starting to remember some things." He nodded pleased with my answer.
"That's good. Now then," he shifted himself closer to the table and took a look at his computer screen, "the thing about this town Lana is that it's small. Just a few houses, some shops, and two schools. There used to be a hospital close by but it burned down and no-one rebuilt it. I moved here to be the best help I can be." He spoke slowly, wanting me to understand. Now I understood why he didn't mention all this on the first night, he didn't want to overwhelm me.
"I contacted the closest hospital to us but the signal between towns is very bad I'm afraid and it took them a while to respond back. I've booked you an appointment for tomorrow and I'll be taking you down there since it's a day's journey. That's where you'll get a full checkup." After he was done he waited for my response but I was still taking it all in. I was left with more questions than I had when I came in.
"So if someone was on deaths bed they could die?" I asked, quite scared for my life. Why did such a town even exist? Why did people choose to stay here?
"During my time here I don't think anyone has died unless it was from natural causes. I worked in the military as a medical officer so you could say I have x-ray vision." He chuckled slightly, trying to lighten the mood and I responded with nervous laughter. Great, I was so going to die.
"What if I had died that night?" Panic started to boil up inside me, my hands trembled with fear, I struggled to keep them still and under control. My mind was filled with anxious thoughts that got worse by the second.
"Lana it's okay. It's been a couple of days and you're doing fine. The impact would have required to be much harder for it to break your skull but from what I saw it was only an open wound. I told you, I have x-ray vision." He flashed me a smile hoping it had settled my nerves. Yes, I felt more at ease but the thought of almost dying or even death, in general, was frightening.
We talked for a while, he answered my curious questions and then did a quick examination. He replaced the bandage on my head with a new one.
"Great, I'll come to pick you up at 7 am tomorrow." He got up and walked to the door and I followed behind. I learned a lot during this session; he seemed like a hopeful man who didn't want to give up trying. Must be because of what he went through. I stepped out of the building and walked down the road into town. I came across a large crowd gathered around two guys, they had their phones out recording whatever was happening. I pushed my way through to get a better look but I was not pleased with what I saw.
Max and Daniel.
Fighting.
Daniel had a cut on the corner of his lips but Max...his face was indistinguishable. He had a bloody nose, he coughed out blood and had a swollen eye. It's like someone smashed his pretty face with a hammer. Max was on the floor, breathing heavily, defeated. Daniel strode to him, his fists were clenched shut and his jaw twitched as he held in his anger; he wanted to swing at him, beat him to death but seeing Max crawl away in fear was satisfying enough.
People around me whispered and gossiped.
'Omg did you see that? Daniel demolished him'.
'This is going on YouTube'.
