After school, Jason headed directly towards the gymnasium. Alexis's basketball team is playing against our school, so he wanted to check her out. I told Jason that I'd be back after I pick Andrew up from his school.
Over the weekend, Andrew asked me if I did any sports at school or any form of intense physical activity. I told him about my at-home workouts including pilates and HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training). As intrigued as he was, he said he wanted to become stronger fast. I mentioned that weights can give you pretty fast results if you're looking to get bigger. He said that he didn't want to go to the weight room alone at his school. I joked saying that I'd go with him, and then he politely asked if I could seriously come...
I told him sure! Like heck I'd skip out on going to a weight room for free!
Andrew got into his t-shirt and basketball shorts. I was already in mine when I left school. Now we're in his school's weight room.
Weights... everywhere.... You've got two benches, three bars to load, a stationary bike, a treadmill, a whole rack of dumbbells, and so much more! If only I could have this at my house...
"Well, what do you wanna do first?" I asked Andrew excitedly.
"Um... I'm honestly not quite sure... Is there anything you can suggest?" he asks ever so shyly.
"Hm... Here!" I picked up one of the dumbbells with my hand. "Take these 20-pound dumbbells and-" before I could hand him another one, he gripped the first one with both of his hands and struggled to keep it above his knees. "Er, nevermind!" I took it back with one of my hands while he stared at his own. His hands were throbbing and hardened with red marks from the handle of the handle. I guess he's never gotten calluses from lifting... "Here, take these 10-pound weights, instead." He held each of them with each hand. He attempted to stand centered even though he lost his balance a bit. "Alright! Now, do you know how to lunge?" Involuntarily, I demonstrated the backward lunge. He nodded and copied me exactly. Helps to have a brain like Andrew's.
"Ouch... why does that hurt my... my, um...."
"Haha, you can say it. Your butt, right?" Andrew's face flushed with embarrassment. "Hey! It's nothing to be ashamed about! Working out your glutes is actually really important. By doing so, you're also helping to prevent lower back pain."
"Really? Wow... I really never knew that..."
"That's something worthwhile to remember in the long run, wouldn't you say?"
"I'd have to work at it every day... but, if I did then I wouldn't have to use my ability to try to cram it into my head and recall it at random times..." That's right... loads of information that he is unfamiliar with instantly activates his one-hour short-term recall where he can remember everything about a subject for an hour... What he's saying is that he wants to be able to store this information into long-term.
"Heh, the knowledge is pointless if you don't execute, bud. Now, come on. Give me 14 backward lunges."
We (and by we, I mean Andrew) continued going through a variety of weighted exercises, and I could tell that he was getting a workout. He held his glutes and his hamstrings and cried to me, "I think all my internal bleeding has been deposited into my butt cheeks..."
"Progress!" I cheer for Andrew.
I heard a couple of guys laughing behind me. I looked in the mirror in front of me to see who they were. Just a couple of jocks doing weighted squats and bicep curls.
