a horrible event

Friday the 15th of March 2019 at 1:40(ish) pm the Al Noor Mosque in Christchurch New Zealand was attacked, 41 people died. Minutes later the Linwood Mosque in Christchurch was attacked, 8 people died. 49 people would then be rushed to Christchurch Hospital where one person would die of their injuries.

Anyone would hope and think that this was make believe. My country was a target of a terrorist attack by a white supremacist; a 28 year old Australian named Brenton Tarrent.

I can't believe something like this would happen in my quiet and quaint country. And it's still super upsetting, and it'll be super upsetting for a long time. The fact that he was able to obtain a legal gun license and wasn't on any watch lists and could still commit such a heinous attack on the Islamic faith just fucks me up.

I hear people saying "this isn't us" "this isn't who we are" but we as New Zealanders need to take a look at ourselves in the mirror. Because when you say "this isn't us" you're forgetting all of the oppressed Maori people who have spent decades trying to get their land back. You're forgetting all of the times white people have said that Maoris are criminals and lazy beneficiaries. All of the stereotypical slurs against my people.

But New Zealand is wonderful place, and we do have our issues when it comes to race, and a lot of other things, but I honestly didn't think terrorism was going to be on that list

But it's amazing seeing my country coming together as one, and I thank everyone else for coming together with us, to stand up against this sort of hate crime, and to make sure everyone is able to practice their religion in peace.
