chapter nine
-&-

Right now, I am heading down the road with Mrs. Jackson.

It's time we find my gown for tonight and honestly, I'm not really looking forward to it. I'm not the type of girl who loves to dress up.

I don't like to put makeup on as much.

If it was up to me, I'd have a solid excuse not to go tonight but Conner is my friend, one of my first ones ever, and deep down, I didn't want to lose that.

So, I'll suck it up and be there for him.

He owes me though for that night.

I looked at Conner, shocked written all over my face.

When did he ask me this?

I know he hasn't asked me because I wouldn't have accepted. So many people will be in the room and I don't think I'm comfortable yet with that.

I don't know many people here, it would be nerve-racking.

Conner looked at me with pleading eyes. "Yeah, Evelyn agreed,"

Feeling eyes turn to me, I had no clue what to do or say.

"Really?" Trevor asked, with a look on his face that showed whether Conner was telling the truth or not.

My head was telling me to say no but when I looked at his family, I don't see them have much faith in his and it's a little heartbreaking.

My heart was screaming to say yes.

Conner nodded his head and looked at me again. "Right?".

Staring at him for a while, I looked at everyone seated before nodding my head and agreeing with what Conner said.

"Yeah, I agreed," I breathed out.

It was quite for a while before a squeal came from Mrs. Jackson.

I looked at her.

"We'll have to go gown shopping just the day before the gala, it will be an amazing trip for us to take. And then we'll get our nails done, oh this will be so much fun, I should call your mom," she went on rambling as I listened to everything she said.

Nails? Gown? Like ball gown?

Oh god

After that dinner, I made sure he told me why he did what he did.

It broke my heart when he told me he thought his father thinks of him as a disappointment. I couldn't help but push away my own selfish needs away.

I get what he means, the not thinking you're enough.

So here I am, heading into a gown shop with Mrs. Jackson ahead of me, getting ready for the Gala.

Entering, it was completely empty.

"I reserved the shop for one hour so well have time to properly find the right fit," Mrs. Jackson said making me smile at her and nod my head.

Standing there waiting, I realized I haven't said thank you for this. Sure I wasn't keen on being here and doing this but she's going out her way to help me get ready and that's really kind of her.
