Gripping her hand tightly, Sebastian followed on in her path, noticing his nerves pick up again. Why did he agree to this? No, he wanted to do this. He wanted to be there for Dana when she needed him most. She looked back at him and her expression showed the same anxieties as his own, and it looked like the hand holding was to comfort both of them. They stepped into the restaurant and the first greeting was a pair of arms around Dana. "Hey! It's been so long since I've seen you! How are you?" The woman looked only a few years older than Dana herself, who put on a fake smile and hugged back.
"Hey Kate! I'm great thank you, how about yourself?" She replied, seemingly keen to distance herself as she pulled away from the hug. "Oh I'm doing well, come on, Josiah is at our table." She led them towards the back of the restaurant, where a man, looking to be in his early 50s, was sat at a table made for 4. As soon as he saw them, he stood up and reached out to hug his daughter. "Hi dad," Dana sighed out, already counting down to when she could leave. Sebastian offered out a hand, which he shook solidly.
"I'm Sebastian." He smiled softly. Her father looked at him up and down, and then back at Dana. "Yes, the current... ah, attachment." He smirked. Raising his eyebrows, Sebastian corrected him. "The boyfriend, actually." His words knocked the grin off of the older man, who pulled his hand away and straightened up his jacket quickly. "I'm sorry, I was unaware that this would last so long." He muttered back, taking his seat again. They all did likewise, and picked up their menus.
For a while, things were going ok, well, in fact, until Dana's father slipped off to the bathroom. Kate eyed Sebastian up, and placed her wine glass on the table. "So, Sebastian, tell me more about yourself. Where are you from?" She picked up her cutlery and dug back into her meal, occasionally glancing up at him. "I-I was born in Romania but I've lived in the USA since I was 12." He admitted, drinking from his own glass. "And how old are you?" She pushed more questions forward, as Sebastian looked to Dana. He could tell how uncomfortable she was, and laid a hand on her leg to calm her.
"36." He replied, noticing Kate's expression change instantly. "Don't you think you're a little old for Dana? Shouldn't you be dating someone closer to your age?" She sassed at him, as he clenched his jaw. "Aren't you a little young for Josiah?" He couldn't hold back his comment, but immediately regretted saying it. Kate looked taken aback, as Dana tried to stifle a laugh. "All I'm saying is that Dana might not be mature enough for you." Kate said nonchalantly, trying to regain her composure. "I'm 29, not 19." Dana countered. "Exactly my point. You should be with someone a little closer to your age, Sebastian." Kate suggested back.
Josiah came back and sat himself down next to Kate. The table fell silent at his arrival, all of them seemingly embarrassed by the conversation they were having. They all tucked into their meals again, struggling to find a topic that wasn't too much of a minefield. However, the next person to speak was Dana's father, so there was no guarantee there. "Have you been in contact with Liam at all?" He asked. Great. That's exactly what they needed to discuss right now. Dana looked to her father, clearly angry at how the discussion was turning out.
"Can we not go there this evening?" She asked, an expression of desperation on her face. "Because I have, and let me tell you something, he's terribly sorry for how things ended with you." Her father continued, ignoring Dana's comment. "He says he'd like to meet up at some point." He smiled to her, as if he was doing her a favour. Dana looked to Sebastian, who was picking at his food, clearly unhappy. "I think we should leave." She said quickly, picking her bag off the ground next to her and stood up. Sebastian looked up at her, standing soon after. She placed some cash in the middle of the table before taking his hand in hers and leaving her father and his girlfriend behind them.
Once outside of the restaurant, Dana hailed a taxi and the two of them wordlessly got in. Dana sighed, pulling herself into his chest. After a few moments silence, she spoke muffled into his jacket. "I'm really sorry." She mumbled, as he held her close. "It's ok," He tried to say back, before she looked up at him. "No it's not. They both treated you like shit and that's really the opposite of ok." She spoke softly. Seb looked at her, seeing the sadness in her eyes. "What matters to me is what you think. Why should I care about anything your father says when I know you don't like him?" Dana relaxed slightly, but held herself in place as the taxi drove them home.
