Dedicated to KeelahPGH because she comments on all my chapters and that makes me smile! :)<see
I hit a freaking piece of cardboard.
If this wasn’t the most embarrassing thing ever, I really have no idea what is. But suddenly, it did get more embarrassing. Maddie had woken up.
As I scramble to get to my feet, I see that she is standing up and feeling around for a light.
I try to stay quiet, and hope she just goes back to bed, because there is no way that I am letting her see me like this. She will never let it go. Unfortunately for me, she decided to come look anyway.
She walks out of her room, turns the hall light on, and takes in the situation. After analyzing it for about a minute, she bursts out laughing.
“Oh my god!” she started, but had to stop because she was laughing too hard.
“Hey.” I said indignantly. “You don’t even know what happened!”
She looks up at me. “I know exactly what happened. You came out of you room for some reason, and you saw a figure outside of my room and freaked out. Then, you crept back in your room and got a bat to try and kill the cardboard. Next, you smashed into it with so much force, that it just fell over, but you went crashing towards the ground. Then, you tried to stay quiet so that I wouldn’t hear you, which obviously didn’t work.”
“How – How did you know that?” I ask, dumbfounded that she pretty much told me exactly what happened.
“I just know you, that’s all. You seem like the type to hit cardboard with bats.” She started laughing again, and I just glared at her.
“Well, you need to get back to bed. After all, it is your first day of school tomorrow.” I smile, knowing that she probably hated that I brought that up.
“Ugh. Don’t remind me.” She glares back at me before walking back into her bedroom.
“Goodnight.” I call while walking down the stairs.
I hear a muffled goodnight, and I smile at myself before finally getting that drink of water that started it all.

My alarm beeps loudly at 6:00 in the morning. Ugh, the morning shift. I think. But then I remember that I am only getting up this early to take Maddie to school. I don’t have the morning shift today. Thank god.
I get up and throw some clothes on before walking down the hall to see if Maddie is awake. I lightly knock on her door while glaring at the stupid cardboard cut outs. I really hate them. When I get no answer, I figure she is sleeping, so I walk in.
I was right. I sat at the edge of her bed and slightly shook her shoulder.
I hear what sounds like “Go away.” But I can’t be sure.
“Maddie, you have to get up for school. We will be late if you don’t.”
She groans loudly before lifting her head from the pillow.
“Do I have to get up?” she whines.
“Yes. Get up, get dressed and brush your hair. It needs it.” I tease, while standing up from the bed.
“I will be making breakfast.” I said after walking out the door. I guess it was too early for her because instead of a snarky comeback like usual, she just glared at me.

After an amazing breakfast that consisted of cheerios with bananas on top (I know, pretty fancy), we hopped into my truck and began driving to Maddie’s new school. I pull up to the front and get out with her. Because it is her first day here, I need to sign her in.
We make it into the office doors and walk in. The secretary gives me a stack of papers. I sign the papers, and Maddie gets a schedule. Once everything that I need to do is done, I turn to Maddie.
“Have a nice first day at school.” I say. Maddie thanks me and I turn around to leave the office. Suddenly, two skinny arms wrap around my stomach from behind.
“Bye.” Maddie says. Before I could say anything, she dashed off, most likely to her first class. I smile to myself.
Maybe I won’t be too bad at this parenting thing after all.
