“How was your first day at school?” I ask Maddie as we were driving back home.

“It was good. I already made two friends. Their names are Sierra and Kanani. They are major One Direction fans, I learned.” Maddie replied with a grin.

“One Direction, my favorite band.” I said sarcastically. Maddie already knows that I don’t really like them.

“They are perfect, no matter what you say.” She fake pouts, looking out the window. I know one thing; I will never be bored with Maddie around.

I am glad she is making friends, though. Changing schools can be tough, especially in the middle of the year. I am praying that Sierra and Kanani will be actually nice people, and not those girls that pretend to be friends with you until you aren’t the talk of the school anymore. I may be a guy, and wasn’t involved with that stuff, but I sure did see it.

We pull up to my flat ten minutes later, and I park my truck before hopping out. Maddie follows me to the door, lugging her school bag on her shoulders.

I notice that the bag seems quite heavy, so I offer to take it from her. She lets me, and as soon as I lift it, my arms drop back down.

“What the heck is in this?” I ask incredulously.

“All of my books, binders and folders. They give us all books that we have to take home in the beginning of the year, and give back at the end.”

“Well you didn’t think to bring them home one at a time?” I mumble, but Maddie ignores me as she makes her way onto the house.

I toss her bag next to her bedroom door, glaring at the cutouts. I hate those things. I head back into the kitchen where Maddie is sitting at the counter.

“What do you want to eat?” I ask, sitting down next to her.

“Anything but soup. I have had enough soup for a good week.” She looked at me pointedly.

“Well, I guess we could go out.” I said, and if I wasn’t mistaken, I thought I saw her eyes light up a bit.

We pull up at a diner across town. I already spend a lot of my time at Luke’s, so we went to the smaller diner down the road. After I parked my truck, we hopped out and headed towards the little hole-in-the-wall diner. I always come here when I need alone time. I held the door open for Maddie, and we made it inside of my favorite place.

The diner was a small little place, and was cozy inside. It had off-white walls and black and white photos in frames everywhere. You could spend an hour just looking at all of the pictures. The waitress seated us in the back, at my favorite booth. It is secluded from everyone else and it is really peaceful. We sat across from each other and Maddie just looked around for a bit.

“How did you find this place?” She asked me, not looking away from the pictures on the walls.

I thought about it and realized that it was my first ever break up that lead me here. His name was Hayden.

“Well,” I started to tell Maddie, but then the memory dragged me back in time.

It was a beautiful autumn day. There was a cool breeze sailing lazily through the air, but the warm sun kept the temperature perfect. It was a great day for a walk, or so Hayden and I thought.

We were walking through the park, only the sound of leaves rustling through the trees and tumbling in bright colors towards the ground. I couldn’t think of anything I’d rather do then walk with my best friend in the middle of autumn. We both needed a break from the hard work of our junior year. Only one more year until we graduate.
