"See you later, and don't get into any trouble while I am gone!" I yell up to Maddie as I walk out the door. I was headed to work the late shift. Luckily Kate was working today.

"I won't!" Maddie yells back as I walk out, closing and locking the door behind me. I trust that I can leave Maddie alone in the house. She is twelve, and mature for her age.

I head to my truck and hop in the driver's side. Suddenly, I get a flash back to a time a few years ago.

"Better now?" I ask the girl sitting in the passenger's seat beside me.

"Yeah. Thanks again." She said, and looked down at her hands.

"No problem. You didn't know this would happen." I reassured Kate.

I was talking to my new co-worker that I met a few weeks ago. Her car had broken down, so her boyfriend was supposed to pick her up after her shift at work. We were the only two working that night, so I wanted to wait for her to make sure she had a ride. I was glad I did. We waited for twenty minutes before deciding that I could just give her a ride.

"Sooo." I said, trying to break the silence in between us.

"Sooo." Kate said back. I looked over at her and chuckled. I guess I have to start the conversation.

"So, let's start with your boyfriend. Why didn't he pick you up?"

"Well..." she said, and started into her long story.

I pull into my special spot in the parking lot of Luke's. I head in with a smile on my face, knowing that Kate is working with me and we are closing together.

"You'll never guess what I just was thinking about." I tell Kate while we are putting on our waiting aprons.

"What?" She ask, curiosity sparking in her eyes.

"That time when I had to take you home from work because your jerk of a boyfriend didn't come to pick you up." I replied.

"Yeah, Stephen was a jerk. He seriously didn't pick me up because he was too busy hitting on my friend Jada. Like, seriously. But, I don't regret dating him, because if I hadn't, we probably wouldn't have been friends for this long." She says with a faint smile on her face. I am glad that she doesn't dwell on the past, or hate Stephen for what he did.

We both know that everything happens for a reason.

"Stop! Not the hair!" Kate squeals as I throw a handful of salt into her hair.

"Well, maybe you should have thought of your hair before you threw pepper into my face." I said, sneezing again.

"But it was so worth it." Kate replies, laughing because I am still sneezing.

We were closing by ourselves tonight, so no other employees stayed behind. One thing led to another, and eventually we were having a salt and pepper fight with the shakers on the tables.

"We should probably start sweeping up this stuff." Kate says, gesturing to the small grains of salt and pepper lying on the ground.

"Yeah, I'll go get the vacuum." I say, and head to the back of the store.

When I come back out to the front of the store, Kate already has her iPhone out.

"Which playlist this time?" She asks.

"All of them." I say, not being able to decide on one.

I handed Kate her vacuum, and she turned the music up loud.

"Let's get this done." Kate says with a smile.

And we dance and sing as loud as we can until there is not a speck of dirt left on the floor.

I unlock the door to my flat, and expect to hear One Direction blaring through the house, but I don't hear anything. Every other time that I left Maddie home alone, she would take advantage of it, and blare her horrid music through the house.

Confused, I walked up the stairs and towards Maddie's room. As I neared Maddie's room, I heard muffled cries. I slowly opened Maddie's door, and saw her laying on her bed, tears streaming down her face.

I walk over to her and sit down on the edge of her bed. She just buries her face into the pillow.

"What's wrong?" I prompt her. She seems to be trying to calm down, so I give her a minute.

When her cries finally subside to sniffles and silent tears, she brings her head up from the pillow to look at me. I don't say anything, just wait for her to speak first.

"You know how I had friends at my old school, and have been trying to keep in touch with them?" She asks me, and I only nod.

"Well, I have been texting, emailing and calling them, but neither of them with answer. Tonight Meaghan just texted me and told me to stop texting and calling her, and that it is annoying her." She said with another sniffle.

"I know you were best friends with Meaghan and Julie, but if they can't take the time to text you back, or call you, then I think that maybe you stop trying. They obviously aren't worth it. If they can't see how much of an amazing girl you are, then they weren't good friends anyway. Plus, you always have Sierra and Kanani to be there for you." I reason, trying my best to give good advice.

She looked up at me, and I wiped the tears from under her eyes.

"And you also will always have me, Kate and Sam. We will always be here for you."

Maddie moves towards me and wraps her skinny arms around my waist.

"Thanks." She simply said, and we sat there with our arms around each other for a few minutes.

"Wanna help me make dinner?" I eventually speak up, unwrapping my arms from Maddie's skinny frame. She lets go too and nods her head.

"As long as it isn't soup."
