Chapter 11 ~ Promise

I know what I said before, that I would never agree to anything One Direction. But, when Maddie asked me, I broke my resolve. She looked at me with hope, and I knew that I couldn’t say no.  I knew she wouldn’t win anyway, but I wanted to see her eyes light up for once.  She had a hard life, and now I want to make her time with me a bit better. Plus, she already promised that she wouldn’t get her hopes up, and that is the main reason why I said yes. It would just kill me more than saying no now if she had gotten her hopes up and then was crushed when she didn’t win. But this is Maddie we were talking about. She is a realist. Which is sad for her age, but it sure makes things a lot easier.

That is why I am sitting in my car five minutes early to pick Maddie up from school. I was excited to see the look on her face when I told her that I would sign it. Although, I am totally not passing up the opportunity to play a prank on her.

All of the sudden, the school doors burst open and kids start pouring out. I wait until I see the familiar face of Maddie. I notice that she is walking with two other girls. I am glad that Sierra and Kanani turned out to be genuinely nice people. It has been a week since Maddie started school, and I am sure the hype over Maddie being new has died down.

I watch as the girls say their goodbyes and part ways. Maddie quickly scans the parking lot before seeing my truck and heads towards it.

“How was your day?” I ask Maddie as she hoists herself up into my truck.

“Good.” She replied. “I got an A on my math test that I have been studying for.”

“The one about absolute values and graphing them?” I ask, because she has been talking about this material for the whole week.

“That’s the one. It was hard, but I took my time and ended up with an A.” She huffed and bucked her seatbelt.

I started up the truck and pulled out of the school lot. I decided that I would wait until we are parked in my driveway to tell her the good news. (Good news according to her.)

We drove in silence, but it wasn’t an awkward silence. Even though Maddie and I have not known each other long, we have already gotten comfortable with each other.  The silence continues before Maddie turns her head away from the window and speaks up.

“How was the diner today?” She asks.

“Well, it was kinda boring because Kate didn’t work today. But then Sam visited for an hour, so it wasn’t too bad.” I reply. I have worked really bad days before, so it definitely could have been worse.

We finally pulled into the driveway. I parked the car, but made no move to get out. Maddie got the hint that I had something to say, so she turned to me.

“What is it?” She asked, confused. I could tell she had no idea what I was going to say.

I put on my best poker face, and began to speak.

“Well, I have been thinking about that thing you wanted me to sign, and I think I have made up my mind.” I said, and tried to play it off as if I were sorry about my decision.

I shook my head. “I’m sorry, but….” Maddie looked down at her lap.

“I decided I am going to sign it.” I finished and waited for a reaction.

“It’s okay, I knew you weren’t going to sign it all along and I wasn’t going to win anyway so what does it matter- WAIT WHAT!?!?!?!?!?”  She squealed, looking back up at my face.

“You are actually going to sign it!?!? Please tell me you aren’t joking.” She eyed me hopefully.

“I am not joking. But you need to keep up your end of the deal, and promise not to be upset when you don’t get picked.” I say, reminding her of our earlier conversation.

“I promise.” She says, and leans across the seat to throw her arms around me.

I promise too, Maddie. I promise too.

Hey guys! I am back! Yay! *starts clapping and sqealing while family just stares*           

Back to the A/N. I am back on wattpad, and I am posting the next chapter tonight!!! Also, if you haven't noticed yet, I am writing another Narry story called Remember. It is about what Harry goes through after Niall is in a car crash and falls into a coma. It is sad, so if you are not into that kinda thing, then you probably shouldn't read it.
