26: The One who Looks Back

A vigorous shake woke Yeri up from their bed, the vampire asked Seulgi why but she was pulled from the bed and went to see a golden beacon from afar that created large dark clouds, then a golden dragon appeared from it.

The taller woman named Joy looked at her before asking, "Am I thinking the way we think it is?"

Then the vampire looked at the other three before walking down the balcony. "Let's go see it for ourselves." She told the others and gets her crossbow. The other four women followed her and prepared their weapons if there are some hostile creatures who will get them.

Five of them starts going towards the golden light that later disappeared from their eyes, however, they now know where it came from. They lived inside the forest so that they won't chase by Jae Bum's and the Council's men, for what the other one did to them, she and the others were now hunted down.

As soon as reached the side of the river, they saw two bodies by the river, both women. One is unconscious and one is already dead.

"Joy, check the other one's pulse." Said the one to the taller woman before kneeling down and touched the vampire with golden hair on her neck then after that she nodded, "She's unconscious."

The other woman checked the other woman and went silent before she declared, "This one's already dead." Irene, the leader sighed and told the others. "Let's get them to our house before anyone could see them." Then she helped them carrying their bodies back to their tree house.

After they get their bodies to their tree house, Seulgi and Wendy treated the queen's wounds while Yeri, Joy and Irene stairs at the body of Sooyoung as they wrapped her with a white cloth all over her body.

Irene looked at the younger vampire, Yeri was devastated as she saw Sooyoung's lifeless body. She could remember how Sooyoung taught the young one to fish and cook foods, she was her first babysitter when Taeyeon was not around.

Then Irene gently took her shoulder as a comfort, "I know you were grieving right now, Yerim. I'm sorry..." she apologized and looked at her. Joy silently rubs Yeri's back gently, "We're here for you, don't worry."

"It's fine, it was a long time ago." Yeri sighed before looking at them. "I should get back to my room, call me when it's dinner already." She said then walked passed the two females and goes inside their room.

As Yeri was inside the room, she lay on her bed and starts thinking about the queen, she had never expected seeing her again. She was happy but at the same time she's lonely, she don't know how would she feel.

She only closed her eyes and takes a nap.

Yeri only woke up when she heard a loud thud coming from outside, she quickly got up and walked to open the door and she saw the queen already awake and she's looking for Sooyoung.

The vampire felt a bit nervous and at the same time relieved as they knew and found that the queen is alive, but she is still afraid to see her as the last time was tragic, her throat was slit by Jae Bum and she could still feel the pain in her throat. Yeri touched her throat and gulped, Taeyeon had seen her how she died and I think she had accepted it already.

She walked to the direction of Taeyeon, she took her deep breath and walked in front of her. Taeyeon was astonished, "No, it can't be." she spoke before mentioning her name for the first time in many centuries. "Yerim?"

She bowed in front of her just like before, "My queen, it has been a while."

"Yerim-ah... You're alive..." Taeyeon still cannot believed it and walked closer to her. "H-How...?"

Later on, Irene appeared in front of them, "Queen Taeyeon, it is an honor to have you here. Yeri will tell you about what had happened after the attack, but first, I have to lead you to where your friend is." She said to her before looking at Yeri as she saved her from a sudden nervousness.

Taeyeon was still confused how did she survived from the knife point. But what's important right now is to see Sooyoung's body, "Where is Sooyoung?" she asked.

Joy appeared behind Irene, "I'm here." The older vampire looked at her with a bit of awkwardness until she answered the taller woman. "Not you, Joy. The other woman." then the taller woman mentally facepalmed.

I thought the queen is calling me, it's almost an honor too-- Joy thought.

Yeri stood up while still looking down before walking closer to Seulgi, then Taeyeon sighed before looking at Irene. "Lead me to her." she answered before Irene nodded and starts walking down the stairs as she leads the queen to where Sooyoung is.

After Taeyeon saw Sooyoung's body, she mourned and gave them a short period of time to be quiet until the queen decided to put her to rest. They buried Sooyoung near the river where she always tells her how beautiful it was, they placed flowers around the grave.

Taeyeon sighed and looked at Yeri before telling the others, "Can I have some privacy for a moment..." Then the five of them nodded and was going to walk away when she spoke again. "With Yeri." Her voice was cold as she looked at the youngest among them.

Yeri stopped as she heard her and Irene glances at them before she led the others back to their house. A moment of silence again had come to between the two vampires until Taeyeon broke it. "Tell me what happened that night."

Then the younger one turn around and looked at the queen straight to her eyes. "My queen," she speaks in a low voice, "I'm sorry--"

"The story, Yerim." She told her firmly.

The servant took a deep breath and starts telling what had happened that night.

"Jae Bum left my corpse in the forest after you were buried under the ground, Irene unnie found me. She turned me into one of undead, I should never deserve to be revived but she told me that I have a purpose. And that is to guide you once again." She told the queen before looking at her.

Then Yeri turned to look at Irene and sighs, "Irene saved me from death, I owe her a lot since then." she mutters. "My body is still warm that time and she found me just in time. Then, when I wake up, I was in her place."

Taeyeon just listened intently, slowly feeling guilty about her. She swore to herself to protect her and keep her safe but she failed.

"I... It's all my fault..." Yeri lowered her head more as tears were falling from her eyes, "I should never take you to the mountain..."

Her heart sank as she could not avoid looking at her regretting the things she shouldn't. Taeyeon slowly lean closer to her and hugs her tightly, "No... it was never your fault, child..." She muttered to Yeri and keeps on hugging her. "I swore to your late family to take care of you. I did my best to make you better..." A tear fell from her eye, "I failed you... Yerim..."

Yeri denied it and shakes her head, "No! You don't understand, my queen! I--"

"I do understand, Yerim... It was my duty to protect and care for you." She bit her lip and holds the younger's hand gently, "This time... I will protect you." she told her then kissed her forehead.

"My queen..." Yeri muttered and hugged her back as she starts sobbing. "Let's go inside... the others were waiting." Then Taeyeon smiled sadly before she starts walking, Yeri stayed for seconds before turning her back, glancing Sooyoung's grave one last time and they went inside...
