I took the bags of leaves to the edge of the road to the curb while wiping more sweat from my forehead with my shirt. I looked up as a UHAUL truck pulled in next door.
A tall dark guy wearing blue jeans, a tshirt, and Timberland boots got out of the driver's side. Then a tannish woman with long, straight and shiny black hair got out of the passenger side. She wore black tights, a purple crop top, purple furry slippers and pitch black shades.
The woman called something to the guy and looked as if she were looking in my direction.
"I'll be one second, just start with the big stuff." She called to him. She began to walk toward me. What the fuck? She stopped in front of me and just stared. "Hi can I help you?" She asked with her hands on her hips.
"Uh--n--nah I'm sorry I didn't mean to stare like that I was just curious to see who was moving in." I said. I could tell she was squinting behind the shades.
"You sure? You always looked at me like that."
"I'm sure, I w--- wait, always?" I squinted back, confused. She took her shades off.
"It's been forever, and you don't look a day older than when we were teens!" She said. My eyes bulged.
"Mona?" I chuckled. She grinned and we brought each other into a hug. "Neither do you, you look great. You still stay in Rosebury?"
"Yep, never left. Just a couple different houses around the city."
" I see. Your boyfriend?" I gestured toward the guy moving furniture.
"Ew, c'mon now. He's just someone I hired to help me move some things to my new place."
"Damn well I guess we're neighbors...again." I said, referring to our freshman year in high school back when we dated for 8 months.
"I guess so. You've let your hair get so long, it looks nice. I remember you use to never let it pass the middle of your ears now it's sitting on your shoulders." She said.
"Yeah, something new. Might cut it today actually, in a high top or something."
"Gosh you'd look so much like the last time I saw you, years ago."
"Right? I got blessed with the non physical aging gene I guess." I said.
"Yeah. But what are you getting into now? How's life been? Outside of prison and all."
"Just getting some shit done around the house, finally got a day off thank God."
"Yeah? Where do you work?" she asked.
"I work overnight at that construction site down town. It's like my second house from how much they've been working me."
"But hell it's one of the best paying jobs around here so can you blame 'em?" She chuckled. I smirked. "How's life been treating you?"
"Pretty good, beautiful wife, beautiful kids, great jobs, and the kids are always on top of their shit in school, so it's going good. How about you?" I said.
"Pretty good other than the moving thing, those times are always stressful. Then on top of it, my little girl is turning 12 next week, which means I have to stretch my money further to make sure she has a good day."
"That's nice, what's her name?"
"Adrienne."
"Ah that's a pretty name. Where's her dad?"
"Fuck if I know." she shrugged and looked down.
"Well hey you got this. 12 years rockin, you'll be fine." I said with my hand reached out to her shoulder. She smiled a little. I let it down.
"Ms. Mona!" The mover called.
"Uh, can I come back in a second?" She said to me.
"Yeah that's fine." I said. She began to walk off. "Hey," I started. She looked back. "You want a drink?"
"That would be nice."
"You got time, let me get this nasty sweaty shit off of me then I'll bring us out some hard lemonade and we could catch up on the porch?" I suggested.
"Yeah...that'll be great." She smiled and walked off. I nodded as she walked to her yard and talked to the mover.
I headed in the house to shave and take a shower. I picked out my curls and let them stay out, and cleaned up my goatee, mustache and sideburn hair from the floor from me shaving it off.
I threw on some gym shorts, a tank top and some socks and put my slides back on and went downstairs. I grabbed a king sized Kit Kat out of the pantry as a knock came from the door. I opened it.
"Right on time." I said, leaving the door open to grab the Lemonades out of the fridge out of the cardboard cupholder. I brought them outside on the porch and we sat in the chairs.
"Wow you look just like when you were younger when you shave, just with longer hair. And you've put on some muscle." She chuckled while opening the drink I handed her.
"Prison and lifting heavy shit for 11 hours a day does wonders." I said, sitting down and opening mine.
"I see. So tell me about your kids." She said, gulping hers down.
"Well I have a son and a daughter." I began.
"Yeah? How old are they?"
"Both are 16."
"Twins?" She looked puzzled.
"Nah, it's kinda difficult... if you know what I mean." I looked at her.
"Not really, no. But they're 16.. were they born while you were...?"
"Yeah. But um.. it's 2 different moms and they gave birth one week after the other."
"Geez so you were fucking 2 people at the same time? Damn it Kee, same old same old." She giggled.
"Not necessarily. The first was already pregnant but I didn't know, even after we broke up, then the second kinda happened unexpectedly."
"Who were they?"
"Angelique and Symphony." I said, taking a swig. She stared at me, eyes wide.
"I knew you always had a thing for Symphony."
"It's not even like that it just... happened when me and Ang broke up. Wanna hear the crazy part?"
"Hm?"
" I found out, one directly after the other right before I got arrested at the hospital."
"Shit. Why were you at the hospital? Gram? I'm sorry, when I heard about her you were already long gone and I didn't really know how to contact you but I'm sorry about your loss. I'm sure she's proud."
"Yeah. But let's not go there right now, I was in there for this." I said, moving the left strap of my tank top over.
"Gee wiz, is that a bullet wound?" She asked. I nodded.
"Bitch went halfway through and they had to remove it and sew my shit back up." I said.
"Damn I'm so sorry. I've missed out on a lot huh?"
"Just a lil bit." I said, taking another swig.
"Well what are your kids names?"
"I had Donna with Angelique and my son Trenton with Symphony. They're the best." I said, twiddling my fingers wishing I had something to smoke. I hadn't smoked anything since I was 18.
"Those are beautiful names. Maybe Donna could meet Adriene?"
"That's up to Angelique." I shrugged.
"Right. Well, how's work?"
"It's straight. I'm hella close to getting this management promotion but I haven't told Ang yet." I said.
" I'm sure she'll be ecstatic. " She began putting chapstick on that she had in a purse near her.
"Yeah. But what's going on with you?" I asked. "What makes you move?"
"Old house had black mold in it. I'd also been wanting a new change in scenery anyway." she shrugged.
" I see. How's work?"
" Well I own a cosmetology shop, so pretty well."
"That new place that just opened a mile or so away?"
" Uh huh." she nodded.
" Oh that's what's up." I smirked.
"What about Angelique and Symphony?"
"Ang is a nurse at the city hospital, and Symphony is a vet. So they're basically both a type of doctor."
"Oh wow. That's interesting."
"Yeah." I nodded. We talked and drank for about 45 more minutes until I checked the time.
"Oh shit, what time is it?" I asked, realizing I had left my phone inside. My head felt dizzy.
"Like 3:30pm."
"Oh damn I gotta go pick my kids up." I said, standing up feeling a tad light-headed.
"Oh let me not hold you up, it was nice talking to you again Kee." Mona said, getting up and grabbing her purse.
"Yeah, same to you." I said, going into the house to grab my keys. I came back out, locking the door behind me.
I drove longer than it's usually supposed to take to get there because of the traffic. Regularly their school got out at around 2, but they both do extracurricular activities every day after school. Donna does cheerleading and Trenton plays basketball and football during the seasons.
I pulled in just as soon as Donna was walking out of the front door and Trenton was down by the bottom of the stairs talking with some group of guys. He glanced and saw me pulling in and motioned toward Donna. He then went to dap them up and got in the backseat. I began to think about later when Angelique got home. Lord I hope she doesn't throw a fit.
"Hey Dad!" Donna said, sitting her bag on the floor, getting in and slamming the door shut.
"Hey, try not to slam." I said, squinting at the loud noise.
" 'Sup Dad." Trenton said, slamming the door shut too. I rolled my eyes.
"Hi. How'd the day go?" I asked. They began talking at the same time. "Woah one at a time."
"Well!" Trenton said loudly and interjected. "I got this stupid amount of homework tonight, there was like 2 fights in the lunchroom, practice was tiring and boring, and there's a game next week." He said while texting on his phone.
"Yeah? What day?"
"Friday night at 7. Are you gonna be working?"
"Nah I'll make sure of it." I said. "What about you princess?"
"Tiring like always." Donna shrugged, taking her hair out of a ponytail.
"Right right." I mumbled.
After we got home, the kids went upstairs and did their homework then showered, then came to bother me downstairs as I made dinner. I checked the time. 6:27pm.
"Something smells good." Donna sung and plopped on the couch while texting.
"Yeah? You'll like it. It goes perfect with you and Trent's little sports diet thing. Something healthy for a change." I said, cooking the last of the sides.
"I hope so. All this soul food have been making practice 10 times harder."
" I bet." I smirked, grabbing bottles of juice out of the fridge and setting them at the dining table.
Ang came home right on time, as I was making the plates and bringing them to the dining table.
"Hey Mom." Trenton said, coming into the living room the same time Angelique came through the front door.
"Hey my angels." She said happily, giving Trenton and Donna kisses on the forehead. Trent called both Symphony and Angelique Mom, it didn't bother Symphony at all. Trent saw them as equal. She looked at me and smiled.
"Look at you, it smells so good."
"It's gonna taste good too." I said, giving her a kiss on the cheek and grabbing her purse and jacket from her and hanging them both on the coat rack by the door.
"I sure hope so." She joked. She sat on the couch and begin to talk with Trenton and Donna. Shortly after, we ate and got settled in.
I walked around the house and made sure all of the doors and windows were locked and everything around the house was straight while Angelique was showering.
I came back up as she was sliding a strap to her sports bra on that she slept in, along with her hair in a messy bun and silk loose shorts.
"Hey beautiful." I said, taking off my shirt and shorts and putting on pajama pants. She eyeballed my body.
"Hey back." She said, smirking. I came and stood behind her, massaging her shoulders. She shut her eyes as I began to kiss her neck.
"You're tense. How was work?" I asked, grabbing her hand and leading her to the bed to sit. I grabbed her lotion and began giving her a back massage. She groaned in pleasure.
"Bullshit. I had this old lady go off on me because her reports weren't printing fast enough, I had to dump another old person's piss out, it was aggravating." She said, gazing off into the distance.
"Damn babe. Well hell, you knew what you signed up for." I shrugged. She scoffed and looked up at me.
"What?" I chuckled. She flipped me off. "Actions speak louder than words." I mumbled.
"Oh yeah?" She looked back at me, eyebrows raised.
"Yeah." I said, intimidatingly. She hopped on me, tackling me onto the bed and began pillow fighting me. I grabbed a pillow and hit her back until we got tired. We cuddled against each other and chuckled.
"Hey?" Angelique semi whispered
"Hey."
"I have a question."
"Shoot." I said.
"So... there were 2 of the glass hard lemonade bottles in the trash can... you drank today?"
"Yeah after I finished shit around the house."
" But... 2? You would've been piss drunk because those things are strong as hell, I doubt you'd have picked the kids up on time or been up to cook dinner." She said, sitting up.
"Yeah I know, I only had one. You remember Mona?"
"Mona?" she said, confused.
"Yeah, girl that went to Crenshaw?" I said.
" Wait, your ex that was Queen slut of Crenshaw you mean? You invited her over to drink?"
" Not exactly... well in a sense but she moved in next door and we were just talking and catching up and I offered her one." I said.
" Great she lives next door. Are you sure that's all?" She said, sitting with her legs over the edge of her side of the bed. I squinted.
"What do you mean that's all? You think something happened?"
"You never know what she has up her sleeve. Symphony told me all about you guys years ago, I haven't forgotten." She said.
"And you're saying you still think it's like that? I don't even have the girl's number." I said.
"No it's not that, just can't trust females."
"You sure it's them that you can't trust?" I scowled.
"Yes I'm sure! It's just... I know how things were in the past and you haven't seen her until now."
"And through all of that you're basically saying me, meaning I'm going to do something like the past. Me never cheating or anything like that with you doesn't seem to come to your mind very much, you judge based on fears."
"Kyjuan it's n--"
"It is. It's fine. Perfectly fine." I said firmly, pulling out the blanket and getting out of it, turning the opposite way. She pulled the string for the nightstand lamp to turn off.
