Rain poured down incessantly, perfectly reflecting the state of your face.
"I'm sorry!" He bowed low, clasping your hands tightly in his. "I didn't know this was going to happen!"
Tears were also cascading down his cheeks, dripping down his chin and making him sniffle. The Marriage Law stated that a quirk user was obliged to marry someone with no abilities, and to enforce this, there were special contracts. You had been betrothed to none other than the timid, kind-hearted green bean, Izuku Midoriya. However, once his power manifested, he had shuffled into the same camp as you, and therefore needed somebody else - a quirkless individual, just like he used to be. Obviously, the distraught expression that enveloped your features was distressing to him as well, but he couldn't bear to relay any of the correct information. What would he tell you? - Sorry, but I desperately wanted a power of my own, so much so that I was willing to sacrifice years of love and devotion?
Your eyes savoured his vulnerable form, while your heart throbbed painfully. "Neither did I..."
"I-I'll make it up to you, I swear! Is there anything you want to do before they officially dissolve our engagement?" The bushy-haired boy stumbled over his words, as his tears threatened to choke them.
With your mind spinning, mercilessly prodding your heart with a thousand tiny needles, you barely heard him. You wanted one more week - just one! As it stood, everything on the tip of your tongue would be fated to remain there. Time was of the essence, but you couldn't take a single step. You couldn't even respond to his question. Beautiful, yet crestfallen eyes burned holes into your very being. His ears longed for your heavenly voice, his lips yearned for your delectable taste. A dispirited smile settled on his lips, as he tried to coax you into conversation. He knew you must be breaking - he could practically hear your heart smashing like a China vase.
He swallowed his fear and plunged forwards, wrapping his arms around you protectively. If anyone saw this affectionate display, there would surely be some form of punishment. The law was quite strict nowadays. Midoriya rested his head atop yours, beginning to gently rake his calloused fingers through your silken locks. He had always adored this - spending time with you, sometimes hours upon hours, meant the world to him. He would often brush your hair or stroke your arms; he did everything to put you at ease. For all that to be robbed from you, from him, was malicious. It hurt. It stabbed your vital organs and severed important arteries.
You loved this boy, and he loved you.
This, you knew.
Now that he had acquired his long-awaited quirk, the curtain was falling on your relationship. You remembered just how much he talked about having a power to call his own. You recalled how he cried after visiting the doctor. You never wanted him to be unhappy. He deserved something to cherish, something to cultivate. You had always thought it would be you. Alas, it seemed as though the universe had cursed you with eternal heartache. You would forever cling to the image of Izuku Midoriya. The way he made you feel, all tingly inside - you would never feel it again.
This, you knew.
